Any advise on a good place to get a short 6.5 grendel magazine that would work well off of a bench. I have the following 5 round magazine.

It will sometimes load 5 rounds if I'm lucky. Sometimes as low as two rounds depending on how the spring is sitting in the magazine body. I had times where rounds fit so snug in the magazine that the bolt is unable to strip them from the magazine when I drop the bolt.

I have 2 of the 10 round ones and they take 5 rounds good, I haven't been able to get more than 8 rounds in them and have them be reliable. The 25 round ones I got work really good but I can only get 24 rounds in them.

I use a C Products Defense 5 round mag with a coil or two off the bottom of the spring so I can easily get 5 rounds in it.
My rifle has always worked 100% so it must be ok.

The ASC 5 and 10 rounders have worked well for me.

I have a few of the original C Products and a few of the ASC mags. I can load only 4 rounds in the 5 round mag and 9 rounds in the ten round mags. I also have the 15 round mags which only accept 14 rounds. I have bought ASC mags from Brownell's and 44mag.com. Brownell's has dropped ASC 6.5 Grendel and is now showing C Products Defense mags for the 6.5 Grendel but they are out of stock. I have 25 round mags from both ASC and C Products and all my mags have been reliable but of the two brands I prefer the ASC.
ASC 6.5 Grendel mags are in stock at 44Mag.com and they have good prices and reasonable shipping.

What is the difference between the ACS 10 round and 5 round? Is it the number of coils that are crunched together on the bottom?

They start with a coil stack that would normally be used for a 30rd mag, then only extend a portion of the coils, using the remaining coils as a limiter.

The latest C-Products with blue followers and a production code stamped SS work well for me. I clean them really well and debur them.

OK. I'll take it apart to see what is happening. Seems like the coil stack is shifting the front of the magazine causing the follower to bind.

Another vote for the ASC mags, I got 5 of various sizes with no problems, I had problems with C-products.

My AA upper came with a 10rd ASC mag. It actually only holds 9rds, but it has cycled through hundreds of rounds flawlessly. I bought three AA 10rd mags through Midway and they run good and actually hold 10rds, unlike the ASC.

The AA 10 rd from Midway works well in a lead sled. First mag I bought and has maybe 100 rounds through it with no issues. I have plans to use this one as a subsonic magazine that I can switch to in the field quickly for shooting grouse and rabbits with some 950 FPS 140gr loads I came up with.
I just got the 15 and 25 rd ASC from 44 mag.com. Seem to be well built and they are stainless steel. They both work fine, I like the 15 rounder because it appears to be the same size as the GI 5.56 20 rounder. The GI 20 rd is the perfect size for 223 guns and I think its a good size for the Grendel too (though limited to 15 rds).

The older Cproducts mags had a many issues. These were the original units that Bill A designed., stainless steel mind you,,,
yet the heat treating yielded a many out of spec half mags-- stamped, yet out of spec -before they were spot welded together to make the final product.
Lots of tweaks to make them run fine-
the total lack of QC was the end result on these squeeze mags, plus the feed lip angle ended up way too low. Cproducts ended up filing for chapter 11.
I tweaked at least 50 for the horde, they run fine. ASc mags are of better quality.. Have not seen an E lander unit yet.
I can shorten any of them if needed .

I know that you asked about a recommended short magazine, but what I find what works best when shooting off a bench is either a magazine with a single load follower or a single shot sled used for the slow fire stages in Highpower. If you've never used one, the bolt locks back after each shot, you lay the loaded round on top of the sled/follower, drop the bolt (bolt release or charging handle) and shoot.
Another benefit is that you can wait until you're ready to take your shot to chamber the next round. If you're using a powder that is temperature sensitive, you'll won't be heating up your next round in a hot chamber as much as if you were shooting semi auto. Any AR15 magazine with a single load follower or an AR15 single shot sled will work with any AR15 caliber. No need to own more than one for all your ARs.
