6.5 Grendel Remington Patrol Rifle

Hi Guys, my first post, just joined. Living in Australia where semi-autos are banned I was wondering how difficult would it be to convert a Remington Patrol pump action(.223 or .308?) to 6.5. All advice much appreciated.

Welcome and a great question! It should not be difficult if you can find someone to make the barrel, and can come up with a 7.62x39 bolt. I would probably use the .308 depending on the magazine issues.

Why not just leave it 308? The reason that the Grendel is great is that it works in the smaller AR15 platform. If you want something different or can't have a .308 because it is a military caliber, a .260 REM would be everything a Grendel is and more. A .260 Rem is a .308 necked down to 6.5mm.

In a short cartridge it is what a .270win is to the 30-06, it takes a magnum cartridge and a bunch of negatives to beat it on performance.

.260rem has been used at 1500yds effectively if that tells you something.

In that caliber I like the 139Scenar and 144 Grain Full Metal Jacket Boat Tail , the 140 Grain Berger VLD Hollow Point Boat Tail, as well as the 140grain AMAX

+15 grains or more powder usually does that. The 260 is still a pleasant cartridge compared to many others and available in several different platforms. It would be a simple rebarrel for the Remington Patrol.

I would think the Remington Pump Patrol rifle with a different barrel and bolt would function great with 6.5 G AR 15 mags. Probably still have a lot less recoil than 12 gauge slug out of an 870 but a whole lot more range and overall effectiveness.

I would like this info when you get a chance....no rush. My brother has a 7600 in 30-06 and I told him I would help hop it up a little. The rifle is at his place so it may be a winter project so I have a little ime. Thanks!

I'd like to add another vote for the .260 Rem. Consider the 120 gr bullet in 6.5. It has the same density as the .277 130 gr and the .308 165 grain bullets.

The reduced case capacity means that the velocities won't be quite as high as those with the .270 Win, but they will give respectably close trajectories and I'd bet your target won't know the difference!

I have shot at least 15 animals in Africa with .260 Rem Ackely improved bolt gun. I would think it would be no problem to convert the patrol rifle to something similar, and use a 22 inch fluted barrel like I did, and it would be lighter weight and a pleasure to shoot. You could probably shoot the pump as rapidly when shooting for accuracy as a semiauto.
