I want to be able to reach out farther with more down range energy and less wind deflection than 556 or 300BLK.
Weight is not a big concern as I have a LW 300BLK for close range needs.
It will have a 4x16 FFP scope since the 65G works well at long range with high BC bullets.
I intend to use it mainly for hunting and accurate long range target shooting.

I hear a lot of good things about centurion. I run a Parallax Tactical PTX FFSSR 15" rail on mine. I really like it. It is skinny where you want it and it has rails where you want them, not all over the place.

I'm not sure how strong it is, but I talked with the designer/owner who said he beats on his in 3-gun competition. If you buy through Brownells you'll have an unconditional guarantee, and the owner of the company told me the same thing. For hunting, or target rifle this is by far the lightest handguard I have owned. Only a glued on tube would be lighter. If you want perfect alignment with your upper, and rails for sights, etc. I think a machined aluminum handguard is the best route.

One thing I did not like when I got to play around with the S&W Vtac rifles. When cycling the rifle, upon bolt lockup the Vtac tube would ring like a bell. Not sure how they do when firing. The tube felt good. I have been contemplating a precision build, and one of the carbon tubes I have been looking at. I also like the MI SS, UTG Pro, and the Troy.

The reason I asked is because I have really gotten into carbon fiber handguards lately. I have a rifle-length version with a quality attachment system for a standard barrel nut that is literally 5.3 oz. With the barrel nut, it is 6.6 oz.

If you will be carrying the 18" for stalking & hunting, sling attachment would be a significant factor for me. I like the Apex Gator Guard, AA's G10 carbon fiber handguards, and this Carbon Fiber unit I have. One of our forum members makes carbon fiber HG's as well.

GMinor, how do you like that 15" FFSSR? I was trying to find out how much it weighs but can't find anything to tell me how it compares to other rails. I do have the 13" FFSSR on my 5.56 build and I really like the look and feel of it. For my Grendel build I want to go light and sleek, so am considering one to put on there.

Went with a 12 inch MI gen 2 rail.

Seemed to be the right one for my Lo pro receiver.

It's light and didn't cost much.

Want to try a slim rail also.
