Interesting. I do like the basic concept, but think the execution was botched.
Using a 5.56 carbine will advertise a downed pilot's location for miles around.
Wouldn't it be much more sensible to make it an integrally suppressed 9mm?



And if they are truly serious about enhancing pilot survivability, they really ought to issue camo flight suits.
The old sage green is fine in the cockpit, but far from the best choice for avoiding detection on the ground.

After spending a fair bit of time as a Forward Air Controller in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam era and seeing how quickly downed pilots were picked up, captured, or killed, I wondered what the purpose of a survival rifle really was.

Later, as I became more familiar with nuclear weapons, their effects and the MAD Doctrine, I understood the purpose better. There would be no airfields to return to, and effectively everyone - military and civilian - would have to get by as hunter-gatherers for at least a year.

In this environment, a 22 Hornet or 5.56 would be a very effective meat gatherer.
