A new bolt gun project
#1
Well i'm thinking of a new bolt gun in grendel. I've seen 4 choice's a cz, savage, ruger and remington if you use the ppc bolt face.So far the cz and savage look to be the easiest to find barrels for i'm looking for input on which one would be the most reliable and i quest easiest to build. this is the basic lay out to what i'm thinking 6.5 g 20in. to 22in. tube shooting 120's to 140gr pill's any input is great thanks jim

I'm close to swapping in a Grendel-based cartridge for my Savage Model 16. I went with this one for the project since it appears that one can swap barrels without necessarily asking a gunsmith to do it.

The barrel nut on the Savage is designed to make headspacing fairly straightforward with no lathe work needed. Lots of info on the Savage Shooters Forum.

Keep us posted -- there's more and more folks going the bolt gun route.

Ahhh .. you could run into feeding issues with the Remington Ruger and Savage. They are not "micro" length actions and are kinda ment to feed at least .308 length ammo. And I think that the shorter "micro" length action has more potential accuracy as there is less length in them to bend during recoil. That said, you can load longer hand loads from the longer actions.

These are concerns shared by many. One can get 7.62x39 magazines for the Model 16, which should resolve at least part of the question. As far as accuracy potential between "micro" and "short" action rifles, a lot will depend on the level of accuracy one needs. I suspect that 99% of us could not tell the difference, even if it exists.

Best bet is to get onto the Savage Shooters Forum, read relevant threads, and pose your own questions when appropriate.

I'm not really sure why you believe there would be feeding issues with those...yes, they are longer actions than necessarily needed, but that just means it may take a fraction of a second longer to cycle.

The Savage 7.62x39 parent rifle has a plug in the back of the magazine to accommodate the shorter cartridge. The Grendel cartridge fits with no mods necessary to the magazine.

I'm using the Savage 10 FCP (7.62x39) as my project rifle. I have all the components needed, just need to gunkote the barrel (Pac-Nor http://www.pac-nor.com), strip the bluing off the receiver and gunkote that as well. Hopefully will be shooting it by mid January.

Has anyone tried a sako vixen as a donor for a grendel build, if one could be found. They seem to be scarce and expensive when found though.

A friend bought one for a 20 practical build and payed about 12-1300USD for it and was pleased he got it so cheaply as a mint one may go for up to half as much again. Georgous little action but for the Grendel there would be the feed rail, bolt face, extractor and possibly mag follower alterations totake into account.

The sako chambered in either 22 or 6mm ppc should have the correct bolt face, extractor and feed rails to handle the grendel cartridge. They were available as repeaters and also single shot.

Had only seen them here in NZ most usually in 222 so if they are obtainable in ppc then someone will get the sweetest little grendel.

A friend rebarreled a Sako 461 Heavy barrel 222 with a rusted barrel into a 20 PPC. The boltface conversion was easy, Berretta even sell the extractor as a spare part ($65 here in Australia) but the feeding has been problematic. He bought a single shot follower and is happy single loading it as a medium range varmiter.

Even those few with 6mm PPC 461s report poor feeding from the magazine.

On the other hand, my Zastava actions feed well after a simple modification to the magazine follower.

They did a good job on my .20 Grendel barrel. But with less than 20 rounds through it, I can't yet say how accurate it is.

BTW, I put mine on a Savage Model 16.

I have a PacNor barrel on a bolt gun. I like it better then my Walther barrel. Both are VERY accurate ( like around .5 moa when new), but the Walther seems to throw a flyer once in a while. By "flyer" I mean 1 shot maybe 1 inch high and right every 75 shots or so. That's my subjective opinion-I cant prove it with data, just my "feelings

Another option (an option I am considering)—after market conversion kit for a DTA SRS or the very new DTA SRS-A1: http://shortactioncustoms.com/?p=1047
