H3 would be the better choice. It is close to the optimum weight (5.36 oz.)for the Grendel. I have a H3G buffer in mine with a Sprinco blue spring. I remember when I installed these parts I had to open the gas valve on my gas block. But you definitely want to back down on your charges. Just because 28.3 gr is safe in one rifle is no guaranty it is safe in yours. You would have seen signs of trouble before this if you started at least 10% below.

Went to the range today with a new H3 buffer. Shot 30 rounds:
10 factory 123 10 123 Amax with 27.4 8208xbr 10 123 Amax with 27.6 8208xbr NO stuck shells!! Everything worked the way it was supposed to. Best groups came with 27.4 gr 8208. NO pressure signs other than a little sharpening of the primer edges on the Hornady 123 Amax. Monday I will start with the chronograph I am truly grateful for all the input from ALL of you. Hopefully, this will be the end of my problems. Dave

Now change the thread title to indicate the problem was solved, "details on page 3".

Interesting. I never would have thought that the buffer would cause enough of a pressure problem to cause case head separation. Wow.
That has me thinking about how I have been using a simple car buffer for so long. I am using a sprinco (tactical springs) red though. Maybe that helps, I don't know. The most of my problems has been forward case ejection. I just put an H3 in there yesterday. I'm hoping that puts my ejection at 3:00 or so. I never had this ejection issue when running an H with standard spring. But after moving to the car, Red spring, and the Sprinco low power extracter spring, it showed up. Now I wonder if that H3, and Red spring might be too much. I guess I will see.

Keep us posted please.
I haven't had any failure to eject problems OR case head separation indicators since changing buffers. As a side thought: I just switched from Hornady to Redding dies and my ejected shells switched from 4-5 o'clock to three o'clock.

davidj Wrote:Keep us posted please. ejection moved to the 3:00/2:30 position. It seems to eject at 3:00 more often than not, but will spit some a little more forward. I guess I can't expect much better without moving to a steel buffer body. Recoil seems lightened a little. It still seems to be reliably cycling and holding back. I think I can live with it. I also changed the buffer tube(vltor 5 position) and hammer(non-cut). It's amazing what a difference these small parts/details make. I am coming to find that a smooth the action is less about what fancy carrier you have, and more about what trigger and buffer components you have. Well, assuming that you're using the right hammer with the right carrier anyway. I have a Melonite treated PWS DI carrier, and a DPMS TiN coated carrier, yet it's the standard phosphate carrier on my A2 style lower that's the smoothest action. Having said that, the PWS carrier I still hold as being superior. It's just interesting. |
