Ruger Mini 6.5 Grendel?
#21
Does anyone know if the Ruger 7.62x39 mags need to be tweaked to work with the Grendel?

I believe the Mini 6.8 mag is what is needed.

I'm praying that with the adoption of the Grendel by SAAMI, Ruger will consider chambering a Mini in 6.5G. Do you hear me Ruger? I will give you lots of money for this.

Here's mine. I already have an Ar just like everyone else and wanted something different:

Mini Garand, whats not to like? I can fit 7 rounds into a 20 round 223 mag. I need to get some 6.8mm mags to try.

Nice Rig!

I read that Grendelizer used Promag 6.8 mags with no problem. Before the great 6.5 Grendel Forum Crash.

I think a Mini-14 in a 6.5 Grendel would be a nice combo for a hunting rifle.

Lou400a,

Can you tell us about the accuracy of that blaster. I'm about to get a Mini-14 for a project rifle, and I'm thinking about a Grendel of course. Maybe I'll need to trade it or sell it for a Mini-30 action, but I would really like a solid-feeling, more traditional stock and receiver arrangement set-up like a heavy-barreled long-range gun.

Have you hand-loaded for it? Any idea about pushing the bolt thrust limitations further than the AR? I think everyone interested in the Mini would like to know as well. Thanks in advance.

I'm also curious about actual accuracy results.

FWIW, ASI makes some accuracy guarantees based on barrel choice, while acknowledging that accuracy often beats their guarantee:

I bet that an experienced Grendel reloader could get good results in short order using a well-built Mini.

Quote:From Accuracy Speaks Website:

Mini 14 - No hot gases are dumped into the bolt. So the bolt is not over come by excessive heat! Also there is no carbon to build up and lock up the bolt!

AR15 - Hot gases are dumped into the bolt to say the least and carbon will build up if not regularly cleaned causing a malfunction and or cease to operate condition. I have yet to see an AR malf from carbon build-up, even suppressed. An AR only needs lubrication, not obssessive-compulsive sergeant major disorder cleaning of the BCG.

Mini 14 - All steel receiver and case hardened to a thickness of at least .020"

AR15 - 75% aluminum alloy with the critical parts steel

Mini 14 - Open bolt design is a close copy of the M14. The open bolt is very forgiving when it comes to dirt, dust or sand. The rifle clean or dirty just keeps ticking and ticking. My experience is the opposite: The exposed bolt design gets sand in it almost immediately in high dust/sand environments, causing malfs when the sand finds its way quickly into the chamber.

AR 15- Closed bolt design. Just ask our troops about the plastic baggies they need to use to keep the sand from jamming up there rifles. Never used plastic baggies. Use plenty of Slip2000, and an AR will stay firing much longer than an M14 in high-sand conditions.

Mini 14 - Self-cleaning gas system no buffer tube to collect moisture or dirt and lock up the buffer system. I've never seen an AR choke from dirt in the extension tube.

AR 15- Must be field stripped to clean trigger compartment, Buffer system, Bolt & carrier and gas tube system. ????

Mini 14 - compact, versatile, and doesn't take up much space.

AR15 - Large bulky ????

Mini 14 - Field strips in seconds. Pop the trigger guard and the rifle practically dismantles it self. Pulling the bolt from a Mini is not as easy as pulling the bolt from an AR.

AR 15- Definitely slower to disassemble. Uh, push out the take-down pin, and pull the BCG with the charge handle.

Mini 14 - Now here the AR has an advantage over the Mini. Out of the box ACCURACY!

AR 15 - Out of the box ACCURACY!

Mini 14 - But here we can help! We can turn your Mini 14 into a rifle that will shoot right next to an AR15 after one of our conversions is completed. Now that we have discussed the pros and cons of the rifles you would have to say the Mini definitely has some advantages and we can take care of the disadvantages!

I have only heard good things about Accuracy System's work over the years, however, they might want to update the comparisions between the AR and the Mini-14. I like a Mini-14 for what it is, but the exposed bolt group does not help it or the M14 with reliability, that I can assure you.

It won't help win a lot of customers making a comparison between the AR15 and Mini-14, but it would help by just focusing on what they do to make a Mini sing an accurate tune. There definitely are a number of challenges with the Garand/M14/Mini action fitting securely and consistently into a traditional stock, and the gas system and op-rod are an entirely different matter to tackle.

I would like a double-lugged receiver, with pillars in an aluminum chassis built into the stock for starters. I also have an idea that would truly free-float the barrel independent of the gas system. I would also like to extend the longitudinal bolt lug track to increase lock time.

I agree, but that propaganda probably helps with at least a portion of their potential Mini customers. For whatever reason, some Mini-14 fans (the vocal ones anyway) seem to have some sort of animosity towards the AR, like one must choose either one or the other. I don't get it, as I own and enjoy both.

Probably just marketing by ASI, as they also work with the AR platform:

Yeah, I've been following Accuracy Systems since 2002, maybe earlier. I like that they do extended gas systems on 26" barrel + for the AR10's.

I'm out of town, but I'll look for some pix on my computer. I've only put one box of 120 gr NB factory ammo through the rifle since I've bought it five or six years ago to function test and its been sitting in the back of the safe. Sadly just can't find the time to shoot as much anymore. Its funny how that happens after you have twins and a job.
It has a 20" barrel with 0.875 diameter if I remember correctly and it did shoot 5 round groups under and inch at 100 yards with a front rest and a sand bag. Its quite heavier than my ar and not as easily cleaned due to action design. The mini Grendel uses standard 7.62x39 bolt so I personally wouldn't load it hotter than factory loads.
I didn't buy it to shoot long range or dump 30 round mags out of it or to tell people its better or more accurate than their AR's. I've had it build because it looked cool, its different, you don't see that many around and looks great sitting next to the Garand.
Hopefully I'll have some time to try out my hand loads in few weeks for my Ar and run them through the mini as well. I'll post results, chrono data and mag function when done.
If there's anybody in south FL that would like to meet and shoot at Markham or Trailglades send me a pm or email.
