120gr speer gold dot vs 120gr Sierra prohunter

I'm looking for some info on either bullet. Shooting it out of a 20" howa. Would primarily be used for deer hunting and some varmints that I'm not worried about saving the pelts. Gonna be a truck gun. If anyone has used either of these bullets I would like some real world experiences. Both seem like a good option as I see going much lower in weight defeats the purpose of a grendel. Thanks in advance

The 120 grain soft point ProHunter is a cup and core bullet that does well at sedate 6.5 Grendel velocities. If used in 264 Winchester magnum at high velocity it is to lightly constructed to be used for anything but varmints IMHO. At 2550 FPS or less the bullet does good on medium size game but may not always produce a pass through. Many forum members get great accuracy with the ProHunter. The ProHunter ballistic coefficient is lower compared to newer designs like the SST’s so it sheds velocity faster.

The 120 grain Gold Dot or Fusion in factory loaded ammo uses a bonded core and generally produces a pass through. The Gold Dot will not shed lead/mass like is common for the ProHunter. Both bullets have been used effectively by forum members. I have shot a couple hundred 120 grain ProHunter and I find it an accurate versatile bullet for distances less than about 300 yards depending on barrel length. I was able to buy factory seconds at the Sierra factory outlet store which made it a very good close range target and general purpose bullet at an affordable price.

I think it boils down to personal choice and intended use. I would pick the Gold Dot fusion if I was going elk hunting where shots would be close to 300 yards. For having a versatile cartridge/bullet for pest control on the farm the ProHunter is still pretty versatile.

I consistently get pass throughs with the gold dots on whitetails. It has become my go too bullet.

You just need to try both. My gun likes the pro hunter.(.75” groups). Performance on deer is great. My gun Didn’t like gold dots so they found a home in TX with another forum member

Just did a quick search of 5 online retailers including Speer but didn’t come up with any. You can put in notifications with some to get an email when they come in stock
