The brand new Odin Works AR in 6.5 Grendel was shot for the first time this morning. The folks that sold me the rifle also supplied a box of Hornady Black 123 ELD-M rounds. That ammo is seriously accurate, and I sure hope I can match that accuracy with my eventual reloads. Ive been reloading for over 40 years, so maybe I can, but the Hornady Black has set a high bar.
Reloading will be with (probably) 100 gr Nosler BTs, Lapua brass, and either H335 (I was able to order more) or BL-C(2).

Why not try some of the same bullets in your hand loads? Ive seen them available online in several places lately

Certainly a good idea, but I need to use up some of whats on hand already, and I like the idea of higher velocity with the 100 gr bullets.

it might take a bit of work but I bet you can match or beat that accuracy.

Thanks, kmon, it seemed time to join the horde. And now that the rifle is sighted in, a big boar hog has moved into my back pastures. Great timing. Hes a big one. Perfect hog for a new caliber try-out.

What distances are you looking at? The 85gr sierras can get silly fast.

what wsa the accuracy of the eldms?
i can easily hit moa steel @ 500
and 1/2 moa steel half the time
with 123 eldm handloads

mdram, I only had a grand total of 20 factory rounds, so I didnt want to shoot em all up. I was sighting in the scope (Leupold VX5HD 3-15 CDS Firedot). It was dead on vertically, but wide left at 100 yards. I adjusted to get me to the center of the target and plunked two more into a tight group in the exact middle of the bullseye. It wasnt a 5 or 10 shot group, but 3 in a tiny cluster in the precise center of the bullseye is a good indicator. And, to say I was pleased is an understatement. I plan to work on reloads next week.
For comparison sake, my 223 AR, when new, would not group like the Grendel did. I had its barrel replaced to get accuracy like the Grendel AR did right out of the box, so to speak.

What length barrel do you have. Im wondering about doing a 12 SBR but havent committed to another caliber. My 18 Odin is a 6ARC.

For hornady black, 10 rounds over the chrono showed 2532fps average velocity, sd of 11 and es 32 out of a 22" criterion. Out of the 18" I'm guessing around 2450fps would be where velocity would land. You should be able to easily exceed factory performance in every respect with hand loads.

My powder order of H335 should show up real soon, and Ill just go ahead and use that in the Grendel. I have a decent supply of 100 and 120 gr Nosler BTs, and Im leaning toward the 100s for the Grendel since I use 120s in my 260. Im looking forward to seeing how this thing will shoot with my reloads. Im expecting another 100 fps with the lighter bullet.
I really didnt need a new rifle and caliber. Theres no way I can shoot up what I already have on 4 deer per year. I need more hogs to show up. And maybe I can get a few coyotes. And happily I just like to shoot paper, and have run through a lot of 223 lately. Now its Grendel time.

I have not shot the 100 NBT in my 18" but have shot the 120 NBT. It is one of the most accurate projectiles I shoot. I only push it to 2400 fps to keep my point of impact the same out to 300 yards as my 129 ABLR (2350 fps) and 120 Gold Dot (2400 fps) loads. All are sub MOA for me.
