Second Time Around

I was registered before around 2010ish after I had started with the Grendel. I then moved on to to 600 yard Benchrest just because I could I guess. As these things happen, I came back around to my AR toys. My shooting partner wanted an ARC so we built it and I decided to dust off my Grendel.

My first Grendel started as an AA Overwatch and morphed into something else. Call it a Grendel benchrest rifle if you will (AA upper/lower, then to a Aero M4E1 lower and Nordic Components heavy walled slick upper, 24" Satern cut rifled heavy w/.936" GB, Triggertech Adaptable, Magpul PRS, Seekins SP3R 15", and SLR S9 gb). I decided it was a heavy pig (accurate heavy pig) and have just finished a lighter Grendel (Aero M4E1 upper/lower, Proof SS 20", Triggertech Adaptable, Magpul PRS Lite, Geissele Mk14 15", and SLR S7 gb). The new one will be fired mostly with a Dead Air Nomad.

At least I have been loading for the Grendel from the beginning and have everything already. For the new toy though, none of the brass fired from the Satern barrel is going to fit so had buy 200 pieces of new Lapua. I kinda figured I'd need to but hoped otherwise as I have so many AA/Lapua already. I'd bought hundreds of once fired AA/Lapua from Les Baer when they were starting the 264 LBC.

Welcome back to the forum DHD. I’m curious id you are full length sizing your brass and bumping the shoulder back? I use a Sheridan case gauge to help set my dies and most of my reloads will work in all my 6.5 Grendel AR-15’s and my Cz527.

Yes, on the bumping the shoulder. I am running into fat cases above the rim. Since I have so much of it, I measured a hundred or so an picked some that were .4422" and under above the rim. They'll chamber and extract mostly but I don't care to have to mortar them out. I do have about 100 of some PPU cases that were once fired and they'll chamber fine but I don't care to use them. The Proof chamber is smaller (at least at the case head area) than the Satern chamber. Both use the .136" bolt FWIW.

New cases should be here no later than Friday and then I can start. I'm not hurting for supplies and have about every bullet available to try from 107-130 grains and 6 different SR primers. I'll try my usual Grendel powders (8208, 2520, and LeverRevolution) and see if the Proof reputation lives for me.

My Satern barreled rifle pushes 107/108's best with 8208 running @ 2675 or so. Favorite bullet for that rifle is a pointed 120 SMK, LeverRevolution, Wolf SRM (or 450's), max mag length @ 2640. This is a 24" barrel.

I typically shoot @ 600 yards off of a very good front rest and rear bag using 22 power and above scopes. I treat them like a bolt gun with some exceptions. These aren't run and gun rifles and I tend to be interested in accuracy above all else.

I will. Brass should be here today according to USPS. I'll have to start over, sort of, but at least I know what shoots good in my other. Maybe I'll get lucky....
