Like the title says folks.
Thinking of having Mark cut me a 16 inch with rifle length gas setup.
Wanting to test something out. Yes yes I know mid length is the proper length if gas for a 16 inch. But I still want to play with this.
What I'm wondering is what size gas port should I go with?
Will be running adjustable gas, lowmass bcg and jp scs buffer system. I'm thinking a .80 plus to .96 size gas port to get this to run correctly.
Kind if think of just going with a standard mid length gas port size and then step it up to fine tune the size port I need to make it run.

Curious about your project, as I can't say this is a path I would go. For something like this, I imagine the safest path is go with a huge gas-port, and an adjustible gas-block. And plan on usings a limited selection of well-tested and adjusted ammo. The M1 Garand runs a gas-port that's 1/2" from the muzzle of that long rifle barrel, and it works well. But it runs a pretty big gas-port, and has a limited window of ammo that works right.

Yes this will only be feed handloads.
As I stated a adjustable gas block will be used, as well as a lowmass bcg and buffer system.
16 inch with rifle gas isn't unheard of, lots of 16 inch 556 barrels out there like this. But to best of my knowledge noone has done it with a grendel. Yet lol.
Probably only running 120 gold dots.
Anybody on here have any technical data from a 556 barrel like this? Are first hand knowledge of a 556 barrel like this to help me figure out what port size I might need too use?

If I wanted to do that I'd probably call Mark and ask him, or somebody expert like that...
'52 or Lr55 might have some ideas on this as well.

I'd go intermediate gas length similar to what Odin sells, a nice happy medium that works well is a pretty soft shooter and I would imagine a whole lot easier to get set up.
eta, the way you set light weights up you will get the rifle gassed 16"er to run like a top.

Proof Research's 16" ARC uses a rifle gas port. I'd try to find out what size they use.

My midlength with aid could is a pretty soft shooter. I think you'll have to go pretty large relatively. I'm thinking you'll have less pressure at the port than a 5.56 dissipator, with the same lack of dwell time. Your plan doesn't sound too bad. If you're just messing around it could be more cost effective to find an already existing rifle length barrel and just have it modified locally.

I'll have to ask your pardon, I'm slow on the uptake here, but what is an "aid could" ?
Aid could=air cooled? dissipator=flash suppressor?

Thank you. If forgot some of the arc barrels had went rifle gas on 16 inch barrel length.
Got too do some more google fuu. But probably going to get it cut with a .80 sized gas port and start there and increase in size if need be.

Pretty sure imeant to say "with a mild comp" but auto correct took over. Dissipator is a type of upper configuration.
