Hi from Oregon

Newcomer. I am long time gun owner, new to the 6.5 platform. Need a primer on how to build or good source of completed 6.5 with maybe 16 or 18". Mostly interested in target shooting, self defense and light hunting. Any pointers welcome!

I hunted in the mountains of Idaho with a 30-06 primarily, so 300 yards is about the limit of my experience.

I live now in western Oregon, where the effective range of 100 to 200 yards would do it I think. With that, I am looking for decent grouping for deer and enough knock down power.

For self defense, I'm thinking beyond the pistol range. Probably the same 300 yard max and in, home defense if needed (pistol primary). I want one shot knock down accuracy and load. Thinking semiautomatic over bolt for this reason.

I am currently semi-handicapped so I am looking for something that I can wield one armed if needed, (I am currently using a walker at times) hence the thinking on the barrel length. I don't want super heavy but need enough mass to help protect my shoulder from too much over-the-top recoil.

I would like (not require) to have enough accuracy to maybe think about a few competitions. I don't know those requirements, but after I retire I would like to explore that a bit and would like at least some good starting platform.

I expect to upgrade as I learn and shoot. But I want a high quality firearm I could shoot for years without worrying about it.

Welcome to the clan, UG, from the great state of Texas! There are threads buried in this tab relating to a Grendel that I built for my nephew. He fell out of a tree stand and broke his back and is now paralyzed from the ribcage down and with limited strength up. I built him a 20" and you can hold it at arms length when firing with virtually no recoil. The keys are a good muzzle brake and the longest practical gas system for the chosen barrel length. Using a longer gas tube spreads the recoil impulse out over time so that the associated weight of the rifle overcomes the majority of the recoil impulse. To date, he has taken several deer and coyotes with it.

Thanks Gents for the warm welcome. I've been a long time Grendel owner and welcome any tips as well. With that said, I've been a long time hunter (40 Years+) that only used a bolt action rifle for hunting.

So in a few months I'm going on a boar hunt, and I'm going to use my Grendel AR platform, that consists of a Mega upper / lower an a Odin works 20" barrel. It's a tac driver. Can anyone please provide me with the min/max load for CFE223 pushing a Nosler 125gr Partition bullet, and min/max load for CFE223 pushing a Barnes 127gr LRX bullet.
