why are 6.5 grendels and .264 LBC rifles so expensive? I have a local shop that specializes in semiautos AR15, AR10, AK's and i can get a complete 5.56 rifle brand new, free floated, with a case and mags and lots of cool stuff for 850. Does anyone make any grendels at that price? why do they cost so much?

The only difference in cost is the barrel. The Grendel has been a relatively low volume item, so the barrel costs have been somewhat higher.

However, if you compare Grendels set up with comparable barrels to 5.56 there is no real difference in price. Most Grendels simply have higher end barrels.

That said, compare J&T uppers for Grendel and 5.56, there is not a lot of difference, and even there, most of it simply is the barrels cost more because there are not as many barrel builders.

No big names ( big in numbers, not reputation) produce LBCs or grendels. When the mass-market mfrs start making good 6.5s and .264s, the economy of scale will undoubtedly kick in and drop prices. That will happen when demand ( and therefore the chance for profit ) gets big enough; I've emailed RRA and Wilson Combat, for instance, asking about any plans for a Grendel ( neither has any plans for a Grendel, btw). If everybody does that, some of the "names' will probably start producing.
Look at .223/5.56 AR varmint guns; you can get a fantastically accurate rifle for around $1K from several makers.

A Grendel can be put together for that same price, considering that barrel/bolt combos are $269. What are we comparing Grendel prices to again? They are no different than a 5.56 AR15, in my experience.

I have built a few AR's over the years and it all comes down to about the same thing with cars. How fast (accurate) do you want to go...how much money do you want to spend. If you want an ammo blaster that MAY shoot accurately then buy a less pricey barrel/bolt combo. If you want a barrel/bolt that will have a better chance to shoot accurately then you will have to spend more money, same as a 5.56. The higher end barrel makers tend to have good customer service because their reputation is on the line.

Their 20 inch grendel is cool, but id rather have one with a free float quadrail, gas block, and flip sights. i wish they had a price for something like that. I have watched gunbroker and looked over classifieds at various sites and I don't think i have ever seen a new free floated grendel with case and mags for 850. Used rifles i have seen for that though. To me they still seem a few hundred more than an AR whether you buy just the upper or the whole rifle. Anyone else got any infor on where to look. I have made it through christmas and tax time with a little extra loot, almost got enough saved to get serious!

To the OP. Mines a J&T. I got it together for less than $800 not including optics. So far it's boringly accurate. You could also buy a complete and sell off the 5.56 barrel and bolt to offset the cost of the Grendel goodies. To be honest though, it's only money. Spend what you need to to get a quality rifle. It will out shoot and outlast you. A good rifle is an investment. A bad one is a paperweight.
