Budget upper recommendation?

Don't be afraid of assembling one yourself. It is not hard to assemble and then you can build one exactly how you like it. There are so many options and everyone has their own preference of where they like to spend their money and where they need the most quality. My upper I assembled with just some hex keys, an end wrench and a tiny hammer. It is so easy that I now help my friends with just the tools in desk drawer.

Why can't you build the upper and then ship it to him?

The guy I'm trying to help is someone I know from another forum, not someone I know personally. We talk a lot but I don't want to get into a deal that involves money or anything.

Lotsa good advice, but I think he said " the budget is around 400 bucks complete". That's cutting it pretty thin.

You're right, that's not a whole lot to work with but that's the price range of the uppers he's been looking at. He may find he's got to shell out a bit more to get what he wants.

Why would "you" pass on it, if you are asking for a friend? Assuming 20% discount worked, why would your friend not want a $500 complete upper in the $400 price range with a higher end $300+ Light Weight Flutted (Hunting, over 1/2 lb lighter than PSA,BCA) Faxon match grade barrel?

BCA...I am a fairly recent convert to the 6.5 Grendel game so all of my experience with BCA is only over the last 19 months.

I now own 5 of their barrels...4 - 6.5 Grendel's 16, 18, 20 (5R) and 24 inch. The odd ball of the 5 is a 16" 7.62x39.

None were complete uppers. I did buy 2 of their right side charge with BCG, which was not assembled. When I did the builds I trued all the receivers and used lok-tite to bed the barrel extension. All were properly torqued and all 5 ring steel without effort out to 400yds. Yes that even includes the 7.62x39. I have received a ton of compliments on other Web sites on it being one of the best shootin 7.62x39 they had seen.

So far only two of them have been to 600yds...the 16 and 24 Grendel's both have scored many hit on the steel at that range.

If it was only luck I wish I had bought a lottery ticket instead of a barrel, because I have ZERO luck. I've been to many many hunting and fishing fund raiser...did the Texas Oilman Tournament for 8 years in a row. I have never walked out with a prize...every ticket I've ever bought or was given went home wit me every time!

I will not speak of their complete uppers, never bought one. But I have not seen a detailed description of anyone having a problem with just the barrel. Certainly not one recently.

He decided to go with a Grendel hunter upper with a Satern Liberty barrel. Awaiting the range report. Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Last I heard Midway AR Stoner were BCA. I?d buy Palmettos State Armory, I bought a PSA 12? Nitride 6.5 Grendel kit and it has been gtg. PSA has a lifetime warranty and good CS. Reading a lot less problems with PSA compared to Bear Creek Armory ?BCA?. Grendel Hunter get good reviews and uses Satern/Liberty Grendel II barrels. Diamondback Firearms have gotten pretty good reviews.

BCA recently stated on social media they knew they had accuracy issues with some of their Grendel barrels and had retooled to fix the problems.

If I was on a budget I would wait until they released the new builds and order directly from them. They do stand behind their warranty. I would not buy from a second hand supplier because they may be moving older stock that is suspect.

FWIW, the PSA Grendel has been very reliable right out of the box, and is a lot of gun for the money. I can't say accuracy has been amazing, but serviceable, and seems to shoot better and better with time as they break in. I just got done taking mine out to 1000 yards, so I guess its ok. I did have an extractor break on me with Wolf Steel, and wrote them about it. They said they didnt have any spare extractors. So we'll just send you an entire replacement BCG. As CS goes, that's up they in WOW territory.

For getting started, I like PSA.
