120 Pro Hunter

How doses the Sierra 120 Pro Hunter do out of the Grendel going about 2400 fps on whitetail. I'm just wondering if it will have enough velocity to open up or will it just punch on through.

Is that the MV or the velocity upon impact...
The pro hunter has a BC of 0.356.
1Shot uses these a lot. He has about 2550 MV and says it works out to about 200 yds for him, IIRC. He has written about this bullet a lot on here, you can search for his posts.

that would be muzzle velocity. This will be my first year hunting with the grendel and this bullet.

I have not shot a deer with the 120 Pro Hunter in the 6.5 Grendel yet. BUT, I have killed a BUNCH of deer with the 120 Pro Hunter out of a 6.5x55 and my buddy with a 260 Rem. out to over 500 yards. This bullet has worked great out at yardages where it has slowed down to what the impact velocities would be in the 6.5 Grendel from muzzle to 200 or so yards. In the rifle that I have set up for this bullet which has an Oden Works 18" barrel I use 28.5 grs IMR 8208, Hornady case, CCI 450 with a COAL of 2.255 and I use a medium Lee Factory Crimp. This averages 2532 fps with temps in the low 80s and 2509 fps with temps in the low 50s when I tested. This load shoots sub MOA all day in both my 18" Oden and 20" BCA barrel rifles. The velocity runs about 40 fps faster in the 20" BCA. I did kill a deer with the 20" BCA last year with the 120 Speer Gold Dot at 111 yards and it did an AWESOME job. I was running it 2550 fps in the temp of low 80s with a MAX in my rifle of 28 grs IMR 8208, Hornady Case, CCI 450 COAL 2.275 which is too long to work through Elander mags but does fine in ASC or ArStoner.

Using my ballistics app PointBlank, 2400 MV would translate to 2017 ft/s at 175 yds, 1084 ft-lb energy.
So if you want to stay above 2000 ft/s that looks like your range limit.

At 2400 fps:
120 Gold Dot ---- 225 yards
120 Pro Hunter ---- 175 yards

Extra 50 yards max rang with the 120 Gold Dot Higher BC

Load it on top of AR Comp and don't look back. It'll do plenty of damage to a deer.

I checked the zero on my Oden Works 6.5 Grendel yesterday with the 120 Sierra Pro Hunter. I plan on using only it for rifle deer hunting this year. On the property where I hunt we have targets set at 100, 177, 596 and 997 yards. The reason for the odd yardage is because this is the only places shooting from one side of the mountain to other spots on the other side of the mountain that targets could be safely placed. There is a 6" steel swinger at the 177 yard target. I have a Primary Arms 1 to 8 power scope with the ACS or something like that reticle. I zeroed one and a half inches high at 100 yards with the tip of the little inverted V like the instructions said for the Grendel and that makes the other yardage marks correspond to POI. Instructions say that the bottom of the inverted V will be dead on at 200 and it pretty much is. I placed the inverted V in the center of the 6" 177 yards steel and the upside down 3/4 circle that surrounds the inverted V perfectly matched the 6" round steel. Two shots hit right where the bottom of the inverted V legs would cover and they touched each other. I guess I am ready to hunt deer because in the Mountains of TN the average shot is under 50 yards. I plan on using my cross bow during bow and muzzle loader season. Bow season opens next Saturday and I am taking a week off to hunt.

I've read that the GD was intended for Grendel velocities, wonder if the PH works the same? I'm taking my son along this year, and will be using my 12.7". Wonder what MV of 2300ish means for distance envelope? Anyone gander a whinney?

High shoulder/spine shot and y'all should be good to go as far as you trust his skills to shoot.

YES the 120 GD was built for the Grendel vel range.
Speer says very strict compliance to these velocities if favorable preformance is needed.

Im have very very good accuracy with 26g AR-Comp and a 120 Sierra. Nice thing is it prints 1? higher than my 3/4? high GD load with same powder and charge.

Its my bullet this year.
