Need mount/ring advice

I just got my 6.5 upper and need advice for scope rings and mounts it is for hunting (coyotes) and I want it as low as it can be and clear the charging handle. Should I go with ultra or extra high rings and mount it to the flattop or use a riser and med rings or go with a one piece? I will probably use a 4-12x40 scope any advice,suggestions are welcom!!...Thanks

Are you sure you wan't it as low as you can and clear the charging handle. I wouldn't recommend that as it will cause you to tilt your head and have a less than proper cheek weld. My favorite mounting height is the Larue LT 104 which places your eye at the same height as the A2 handle sight 1.5" above the top of the rail. http://www.laruetactical.com/larue-tacti...-qd-lt-104

In many cases, mounting a scope as low as possible is good advice. But with the AR-15 platform, it's usually best to mount the optic so that its centerline is ~1.5" above the rail. Stock design, shooting style, and individual facial structure come into play, but ~1.5" works for most people.

Individual rings work fine, but it's somewhat dependent upon the design of your preferred scope (such as turret placement, eye relief, etc). It's suggested to mount both rings to the upper receiver, and avoid mounting the front ring on the handguard (unless it's a true monolithic design where as upper receiver and handguard are one piece). If the scope will allow both rings to be mounted on the upper receiver, and at the right height with proper eye relief, any quality rings should serve fine.

If this isn't possible, there are numerous cantilever style mounts specifically for the AR-15 that will work, or a cantilever picatinny riser will work too.

Note that not all ring manufacturers measure ring height the same. Some measure to the bottom of the ring, while others might measure to the centerline. Also, some are designed for picatinny and others weaver rails, and some might work on both, but I suggest using rings specifically for picatinny rails. If you go with a riser, adjust ring height accordingly.

Obviously, I haven't given you anything specific, as I generally use scope mounts designed for the AR. Brands such as Burris, LaRue, ADM, and Bobro come to mind. The Burris PEPR (available in 1" and 30mm sizes) is one of the less costly options that usually works well.

If you choose rings or rings / risers, just be sure to focus on height and eye relief, while attaching only to the upper receiver. Or choose a mount that already takes these factors into consideration.

I bought a set of high rings for mine and boy did I goof. This was the first time I bought a scope for an AR so it was a learning experience for me. I ended up having to use a extra set or risers in order to get them up to the proper height, not even ultra high rings will raise the scope up to the proper height, so my advise is don't bother using normal rings on an AR but instead go with a mount designed for the AR like already mentioned above.

When I put my Grendel together I already had a set of high Warne rings and bought a pair of 1/2" risers from YHM. The set-up worked but after more reading and research I want to go to the Larue LT-104 or LT-158 Cantilever mount. They are pricey but highly recommended. I'm also consider the Vortex ADR Cantilever Mount.

Anyone have a Larue for sale let me know!

what style scope rings will I need for my ar upper? Im a little new and need to get some.

Scope shouldn't really matter. Warne has a nice one piece that's not Quick Detach, they make good quality stuff. LaRue is hands down good. Just decide on scope first, then you know if your getting a 30mm or 1 inch ring mount. The Burris AR mount will work, but its made in China. If you don't need QD go Warne, otherwise Larue IMO.

Larue also makes there cantilever mount without the quick detach and it's $50 cheaper.
