I typically just run a couple patches through it till they aren’t carbon colored. Then I got some Wipe-Out and figured I’d treat it to an extreme clean......it definitely didn’t like that. I was shocked at my old rifle all of a sudden spraying bullets. I’m a good 120 back in from the untra clean and just like that she started shooting again. Weirdest thing. Just glad I got my shooter back.

Klem, what is your take on the anti copper fouling powders like CFE 223? If having copper in the pores helps with accuracy then will CFE 223 degrade your rifle's accuracy? I'm seeing an accuracy advantage with Lever over CFE 223 and I'm thinking that may be why.

I most definitely see an accuracy advantage with LVR over CFE. I also see less copper in my gun that I run CFE in but I don’t think it eliminates Copper I think it just reduces build up a bit.

To be honest I have never used CFE so can't comment from experience.

I imagine if the inside of the barrel has been machined roughly then surely some copper is going to be deposited in the pores even if the powder burn behind it has some copper stripping properties. I also think there's a degree of marketing in powder sales and that it would not be as efficient as implied.

I have a Shilen 20” 6.5 Grendel barrel which has digested several hundred reloads with CFE223 powder. I cleaned the barrel once with Sweets copper fouling eliminator. I was amazed how little blue copper residue was on the cleaning patch. This Shilen barrel was always an accurate barrel and I didn’t notice a degradation in accuracy after using the sweets. I normally cleaned that barrel with Breakfree CLP and I’d say that barrel has digested around 2,000+ rounds. I never used sweets on any of my other barrels but tried it on my Shilen out of curiosity.

CFE definitely reduces copper build up but doesn’t eliminate it. I use it in my .17 hornet now and has really reduced how often I have to clean. I use a bore snake and call it good now. I also use it in the grendel and 300 ham’r, same results but they don’t run as fast so less copper issues in the first place.
