Well…

I did hunt with my grendel last year for deer season, and bagged a doe at about 75m with flip irons. I prolly will take it again this year, But that is not my chief purpose for the carbine.

The 16” carbine version I own is obviously not intended as a specialty long distance rifle. That being said What I would like to find for my rifle is a good all purpose optic that will allow me to engage targets anywhere from CQC out to and in excess of 500m. Specifically allowing me to push the envelope of how far I can shoot effectively with out giving up the ability to quickly engage targets at close distances as well.

With targets corresponding to 300m and closer an all purpose zero can be achieved that will put my point of impact close enough to be effective with out the need of bdc.

The maximum effective range for a 16” 5.56 m4 is 500m for a point target and 600m for an area. I have seen shots made with an m4 beyond 600m.

What I really want to find out is, when firing a more efficient 6.5mm round out of a similar carbine how far can I push out the maximum effective range? Not just of the rifle of coarse but of the me+rifle+optic combination.

I know that The bdc will never be perfect not only because it is not intended for the drop of this round + rifle but also because there are all sorts of other external factors affecting the round such as temp, elevation, humidity, ECT… however if I can find an optic with a close bdc in access of 500m. I can then begin to gather more dope and experience with limitations and abilities this optic+rifle+me combination.

Really what I am keeping my eyes out for is a 1-4x or preferably 1-6x optic with adequate bdc for 6.5mm out to beyond 600m. and basically go on from there building personal marksmanship abilities with this specific platform/combination.

I am however limited in my budget, I can just go blow a few thousand on a new optic, similarly if I am going to shell out the cash to get an optic, I want it to fulfill my expectations and needs adequately. Nothing worse than shelling out for something that ain’t right or not really what you wanted.

I have checked out many, many different optics and the data they have for bdc built for 308 and 556in different scopes. some seem close, others seem way off at even 400m-500m distances.

still on the look out for the right one for me...

USAR:

OK, let me get this one straight. You want something good for CQC through engaging upper torso size targets at distances past 600 meters. And you don't want to spend more than one thousand dollars (?)

First -- you will not find an optic that is good for CQC and also good for distances past 300. The Army thought the ACOG would work but it didn't so guys either sucked at CQC with one or they put a dot sight on the optic or front rail to use for CQC. The issued ACOGs also suck for distance shooting because of a number of reasons but two of them are low magnification and a reticule pattern that is damn hard to see.

As for BDC's. They are fine as long as the reticule has a pattern that allows you to estimate range within about 5% of true distance. (A 10X optic is almost required for this task.) In your case I would not go with a mil reticule but rather something with minutes of angle stadia as minutes of angle is much easier to deal with than mils when you must add / subtract / divide / multiply in your head.

So, I would look at the following.

The optic is ergonomically designed for the AR-15. In other words, it is short in length and has a medium eye relief.

The optic is capable of 10X.

The BDC is calibrated in yards (M-80 ball ought to do for a BDC) and has at least 1/2 minute elevation and windage capability.

The reticule pattern uses minutes of angle in terms of stadia. You do not need one minute stadia for your purposes. 2 minute stadia are fine. I wouldn't get bigger than two minutes per tick though.

Oh yes, mount a dot sight on the forend at 2 o-clock and use the dot for CQC. Or mount a micro dot on top of the optic.

Total cost with La Rue QD mount ought to run about $2K for the optic, mount, and dot sight.
