AA 14" Barrel?

I looking at putting my Grendel on a diet and loose some weight. A guy has an AA 14" barrel on Gunbroker. Anybody have any experience with one of these? Are they any good? It must be a carbine gas system, do they function ok? What twist would it have?

I don't know what they've offered it the past, but I can't find an AA 14.5" upper listed anywhere on their site. Curious if this is an AA barrel or something like a Saber Defense. I'm sure one of the seasoned vets can come along and tell your for sure, might have been before my time.

AA discontinued the 14.5" upper some time (maybe a year or two?) ago. IIRC, the barrel was made by Saber Defense for AA.

65Whelen, I'm not sure if I recall correctly, but I think the 14.5" barrel has a 1:7.5 rifling twist.

One of the draw backs of this 14" barrel, I'd have to remove the pinned flash suppressor in order to install the handguard I want. Anyone have any experience doing this? I checked U-Tube and watched some guys do it a couple different ways. Is it worth the effort?

Whelen...just to make you aware, RedX Arms has 14.5 inch barrels with CLGS for $200. There's no muzzle device attached, so you can pin and weld your own.

Thanks for the heads up. A definite consideration. Would be a super deal if the bolt were included.

You can get a bolt for $75-85, it is still hard to beat that price.

I have one I plan to cut down to 12.5" and run the Sig Tac SB15 brace. The muzzle was damaged when I got it, instead of sending it back I decided to go this route.

That looks just like my 14.5 inch AA upper. It shoots Hornady factory ammo at just under 1 inch. The Wolf Steel stuff maybe 5 inches.

I checked at Redx Arms last week and the barrels were gone. Now I checked again and they have 5 in-stock, odd? Anyway it a good deal, add a bolt($80) and a muzzle break($70) and for $350 you got a good barrel ready to go. At least on paper it look good.

The upper in this picture and story is a Sabre Defense complete upper from Redx, we are happy with it. It makes meat! Now it's not as accurate as my 24" overwatch but it sure is lighter!

I have one of these barrels also, what buffer are you using?

I bought one of the Sabre 14.5" Grendel barrels from RedXArms and a Saturn Heli-Coil Muzzle Brake from a fellow Horde member. The barrel is a little dinged up and the throat is on the short side. I have four different bullets on hand and the 129 SST is the only one I'll be able to load to 2.260. Factory ammo(Hornady 123 SST) sticks in the chamber with the bullet into the lands.

Will be loading up some 129 SST and see how it shoots when the weather breaks. It's been a little chilly around here lately.

It has a carbine gas length system. I'm assuming you mean handguard when you mention "carbine rail to save weight". I like the 12" handguard because it give the BUIS a longer sight radius. It only adds an ounce over a 9" handgaurd.

Well I have the barrel, now it's how do I make the best of it? It'll make a great brush gun. All I have to do is get it to function and some decent accuracy. What can go wrong lol.

I like that color combo, I'm going to build a 18" Grendel in that color scheme after I finish my SBR FDE! Have you thought about seeing if Mark at PF can fix the chamber so you can shoot factory ammo? Or are you OK with the situation?

I did emailed PF and asked about the fixing chamber, unfortunately because the barrel is chrome lined they can't do anything. I do my own reloading so now it's see what works and what doesn't.

I like the OD Green, the only problem each vendor has a different idea of what OD Green is. Magpul, MI, BCM all have different shades. I thinking of doing my own camo job on it, would be a fun project.
