coyote pelt bullet

Anybody have a recommendations for a pelt friendly coyote bullet/load? I have SMK 107s, 100 TTSXs and 120 Rem Core Lokt on hand.

Midway advertises this projectiles sectional density as .279, Sierra list it as .174: this could be a very explosive projectile at 2800 fps +

Yeah midway isn't always spot on with their specs but hose bullets ar probably the best bet for ot exiting a yote I ave seen a few loads pushin 3000 fps

I'll probably use my 18" JP Grendel for coyotes in the next few months, but I'm not interested in pelts.

Except in some kind of emergency, I wouldn't hunt with FMJ bullets.....too many potential unintended consequences. JMHO/YMMV.

If I was interested in the pelts, I'd be using a 17 or 20 caliber: .17Rem, 17/204 or .204 Ruger. All three have put dogs in the dirt for me, with very little damage to the hide.....going in or coming out.

My Grendel loves the 85gr Sierra's, especially with 31.6gr of TAC, and that'll be my bullet of choice.

I really thought that with your screen name you might have advocated for the VarTarg rather than the 204. My VarTarg is probably the most accurate rifle I have (to date) and with the 35gn berger @ 3735fps, have had great sucess on goats so would have expected that it would perform equally well on something like your coyotes. I built mine on a XR100 in 204 and had it re-chambered for the VarTarg.

Good point, Von Gruff......I almost mentioned the 20VT and 17FB.

I love both, and you could even add the 22 Hornet to the list as well, but I've always wanted something with more "oomph" and reach. Most shots are 150 yards or under, but you never know.

I shot a fox last week at 130 yards with my 6X45 AR and a 70gr NBT...blew his guts out the backside...DRT for sure. For pelts, in my experience, that's why small pills and high velocity are the key. I'm not saying the 65G isn't a predator killer....just not a good choice for fur keepers.

I agree with statement above about small fast moving bullets for fur harvesting but he did ask what bullet would be best for use with 6.5 Grendel hence the 85 grain varminter recomendation to go for one hole or an fmj with goal of 2 small holes the best reviewed bullets for pelt harvesting I have seen are the compressed tungsten fragmentation bullets they hit and the jacket opens an the core turns to dust

The 120 grain Normas are excellent bullets, but yikes the price has gone up. They are heavier and will retain energy at long range better than the others because of a higher BC, if that maters to you. The Norma's are some of the most accurate bullets I've fired in the Grendel.

In Europe they use them to shoot birds so they don't damage the plumage.
