Rough idea of velocity difference between 16" and 20" or 22" barrels?

I am thinking about either a 16" upper or a Ruger American Predator 22" to get something lighter in Grendel. I am currently getting 2525FPS on Hornady Black out of a 20" upper. What would I be expecting to get out of the predator or a 16" upper?

The 22” will push that load anywhere from where you’re at with the 20”, to 2580fps. Just depends on the rifling profile and chamber.

16” will typically spit that in the mid 2400fps region.

There is hardly any perceptible difference from shooter’s perspective as to what the bullet will do from all 3 of those barrel lengths.



We made a chart covering 24” down to 10.5” in the Grendel Handbooks that shows the muzzle velocity ranges for each barrel length, Maximum Expansion Ranges with 123gr SST for each, and Point Blank Zero ranges for each with 123gr SST.

I am thinking I might be happiest with the Predator. Will be a drop in weight plus having a bolt to fool with in this cartridge should be interesting.
