Hey all -
As you may have noticed I am new to the Grendel, courtesy of a visit to my local gun show in Ft Worth. Hadn't planned on buying but got a good deal and dove in.
I have been to the range twice with the gun and shoot very respectable groups with Alexander Arms ammunition and Hornady Amax factory loads.
Have yet to buy a set of dies and reload.
Anyhow, I got a call back from Alexander Arms today and they state that my gun was sold in 2007 to a dealer.
I see what retail is on the 24" Overwatch rifle today and I wonder how many changes the gun has been through in 5 years. Specifically chamber spec , barrel make, twists, things that matter for accuracy and function.
This is a question borne from curiosity, I haven't been disappointed yet with the gun I bought nor it's performance. The only thing I would change is the trigger....
Which leads me to my next question, the gun has the stock trigger in it. What was the stock setting in trigger pull and have any of your had "work" done to the stock trigger? What specifically was done (springs only or stoning etc...) and did you think it made a huge difference?
If you bought a drop in what do you recommend at $ 100.00 or less.
I would like a crisp break, less anticipation.

Assuming that there was no upgrade to a Satern barrel done back then, (they were available before Shilen became the option) there had been almost no changes in the last 4 years.
I think that sometime in 2010 (or maybe early 2011) the monolithic upper became an option, and the AA Tactical Trigger has been on option the entire time to my knowledge.
It sounds like you have a bone stock Overwatch. They shoot very well, (Bill Alexander is a bit fanatical about quality barrels, regardless of the price point!), and almost everyone I've corresponded with has been very happy with their overwatch.
As for a sub-100 trigger upgrade, someone else will have to chime in, because I haven't found one that I could recommend. I usually tell people to save a little longer and buy an AA Tactical trigger, which breaks at about 4 pounds, if they want a single stage, or step up to the Geissle if they want a 2 stage.

Benny, if you want an -el cheapo alternative on the trigger- contact Bill Springfield. Send your fire control group-trigger, hammer, disconnect, and springs- state the trigger lb. pull you want. I have a 3.5, and it's like breaking glass, for $35.00. Check online.

Just noticed that the 24" upper only options (Overwatch, AWS) no longer include shilen upgrade...what's up with that?

Yeah, that might be an error. The option was there a couple of days ago. I was looking because I'm going to have to order one soon for a friend.
I took the gun to a local yesterday, he did an install of the JP reduced weight springs kit and polished the hammer and other surfaces. We measured the trigger pull at 7.5 lbs before the work and 4.5 lbs after he was done. No other changes made in the fire control group area.
He mentioned that the length of travel to engage (disengage) the disconnect was greater than most other AR's. He was baffeled at this observation, he threw in a couple of different parts but the gun reacted the same to all. He said it wasn't a problem just to be advised.
Also I had him put in a BCM Extractor Spring Upgrade Kit. BOY did that give him fits. We both tried (4 hands at once) to tame that beast but we couldn't get the cross pin to go in with the new spring and oring donut. So we ultimately dumped the donut and went with just the upgrade spring and that still was a chore.
Before the upgrade the cross pin would fall out with little to no encouragement (gravity would do it with a few shakes) and after the upgrade I cannot even budge the extractor with my fingers TIGHT. Hopefully there isn't too much stress on the cross pin now and/or it doesn't mar the rim of the cartridge during cycling...
