Invasion plans for Texas

grayfox Wrote:I could maybe see getting down there in cooler weather...
So... the flashlite thingy, you what -- clip on a headlamp? (LOL!!)
I've got one of the red/green lights, so that could work.
Early morn/late afternoon would be better for me.
But, who knows, flexible somewhat.
2 days' drive down there, and then same on back.

Elusive wildlife makes some great weapon hunting lights. And they have a few mounting options. It's best to keep your light forward of your sight and face when trying to shoot a moving animal in the dark.

I use their feeder lights for night hog hunting. Good company and good cs as well.

Also advertises on Texas hunting.

Hunts only on weekends.

Wow! That guy has a lot of hogs! I hope my new lease isn't over run like his place.

You can kill plenty of pigs at Hunters Creek Ranch without NV or thermals.

I have plenty of lights and 2 extra Photon RT?s someone is welcome to use.

Bobby was working of a deal with a guy the last time I was at HCR to get a couple of AR?s with thermals to rent.

There are some big gators on that property as well.

Bobby also runs them with dogs.

GreyFox you have got to come.

New Texas Laws Affecting Feral Hog Hunting, License Validation Take Effect Sept. 1

AUSTIN ? Feral hogs are so loathed by landowners in Texas for their habitat destroying behavior that beginning Sept. 1, you won?t even need a hunting license to pursue them on private property. That?s when a new law takes effect removing even more obstacles from controlling hog numbers.

The new law, SB 317 by Sen. Bryan Hughes (Mineola), passed during the 86th Texas Legislature and exempts any person (resident or nonresident), with landowner consent, from a hunting license requirement to hunt feral hogs. It is still a violation to hunt without a license if hunting without consent. The new law removes any reference to depredation and the exemption applies for the take of all feral hogs.

The new law only applies to private property, and is irrelevant of whether or not it is a paid hunt, although allowing hunting access in return for financial or other consideration still requires a hunting lease license from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. A hunting license is still required on public land. Hunter education requirements also still apply.
Hunters Can Use Digital Image of Licenses Afield

Also effective Sept. 1, in most cases hunters will not be required to carry their original paper hunting and fishing licenses with them to the field. HB 547 by State Rep. Terry Canales (Edinburg) allows licensees to use a photograph of their physical license to serve as verification of a valid license while hunting any game that doesn?t need a tag, like dove. You must carry your physical license with you for deer and turkey hunts, and if you want to retain an oversized red drum, since they require tags. Your license can now be viewed digitally on the Outdoor Annual mobile app or the My Texas Hunt Harvest app. Also accepted will be a legible digital photo, your emailed receipt, or your online purchase record. If your Outdoor Annual app was downloaded before Aug. 15, you?ll need to update it to version 6 in order to access your license and view the 2019-2020 regulations.

Hogs are a huge problem. There is, or at least used to be and operation out of Bardwell Texas that hunts hogs out of a helicopter. They hunt during the winter when the foliage is off the trees so they can run them out of the creek bottoms into the open and into the fields to get clean shots. They need a minimum of ???? lots of land to hunt on perhaps 1500 acres or more so land owners get together and form a group to pay them to hunt an area. I have heard (and this is hearsay) that it is $1600/hr to hunt with them so it is pretty pricy to go up. They had a hunting program at one time on TV.

The farmers and ranchers around that area had a huge problem with them and the darned things could do a lot of damage to crops. I have seen water lines and phone lines rooted up by them. They are largely nocturnal but not entirely. They will feed anytime the weather is right. We moved from there and have hog problems here as well. Heck they're all over the state pretty much except west Texas. Too Damned Hot and Dry.

That's one of the reasons why I'm building my Grendel. The things rooted up my front yard and my back yard a couple of years ago. We haven't had any for a couple of years but we have Gophers now. A friend told me they were after the grub worms. Could be truth to that.

Hogs will root for worms, grubs, and other larvae. That is typically more shallow rooting. You said you had gophers, now. I suspect you may have moles, they also love to go after worms and larvae.

In 7 days I’m going to be in the great state of Texas killing your pigs!

I am so excited, first blood with the Grendel.

Good luck hope you have great luck and lots of fun. I don't know what I have but they burrow a lot and leave lots of mounds. I shot at one with my 22 one day but don't see them. I just see more mounds each day. I haven't seen any hogs since the moles, gophers or whatever came to visit. The hogs left deep holes where they rooted. all round the trees. I managed to kill a couple of them.

I worked up a near subsonic load with a 150gr. cast lead moly coated bullet loaded in my 6.5 CM with 11gr. of Trail Boss powder. it gave about 1100/fps Wonder if that will do ok with the Grendel? It has a lot of drop but is ok for close shooting.

JGH,
Not a big fan of reduced loads. Got a bullet stuck in the barrel of my 375H&H with Trail Boss.

C,

Why did the bullet stop half way down the barrel?

Klem,
I don?t have a clue as to why the bullet stopped half way down the barrel. I was not shooting solids, shooting my regular cup and core practice bullet. Very light bullet 235 grain Speer Hot Core.

I have shot many, many rounds of big bore guns with Trail Boss and have not ever had a problem. For a very long time I?ve used TB to practice in my Lott, .416 Rigby and 375 H&H.

Basically you just fill the case up with TB and shoot.

Something happened this time, not sure what.

Spent an hour on the phone with Hodgdon trying to figure it out. They said that it was impossible for that to happen and that I must have been shooting a heavy solid.

I was reloading at the range, only had TB and Speer 235’s with me.

My gunsmith got the round out.

This scared the Shite out of me. I still have 16 lbs of TB in my basement. If any Horde member wants them they are yours for free.

Chuck,

No reason to be too concerned if the bullet doesn't make it out...As long as you don't fire another one behind it. As for when bullets get stuck half way down, use a rod and tap them out, that's what you do when you slug a barrel and that's what your gunsmith would have done.

A few reasons why the bullet might have got stuck and the most obvious one is no powder or an under-load. If there was more smoke than normal with a hissing sound it's failure to obdurate. The neck doesn't expand and seal so the gas escapes backwards around the case and out the action. If the neck has a split you can almost guarantee this with low pressure rounds.

That's a lot of powder to give away. My advice, don't throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Thanks for the advice Klem, this issue kept me up for days. I?ve seen a heavy steel core solid not exit a bbl on a 458,
But not a light cup and core. I still shoot a lot of the 235?s in the H&H but not with TB.

In the back of my mind I keep thinking what if I shot another round with a barrel obstruction.

A few things came to mind. On Johnny's Reloading bench https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ7ZytK...p9LXXxinJQ
There was an episode where he was trying to replicate a squib load using a combination of a lower energy primer and powder. He did succeed in that with a results that the primer went off but the powder did not fully combust.
In your case the primer obviously went off and if you are certain there was powder in the case then it is likely the powder did not fully combust or did not ignite at all.
Did you use a magnum primer? If so was it the most energetic brand?
Thing number two would be to use a cast bullet instead of a jacketed one. It would be cheaper and cast bullets have lower friction so can be loaded lighter than jacketed. Trail boss is a great powder for cast bullets.

Thanks Lemonaid,
I was using a Federal mag primer. When I opened the chamber a lot of smoke and a little charred powder came out.

TB was my go to powder for big bore practice. In retrospect I agree with you that cast bullets lend themselves better to low pressure loads.

For two months out of the year, I shoot big guns. I just don?t feel comfortable shooting reduced loads anymore.

Something wasn?t right that day, I was loading at the range, same load that I have shot many many times.

CJW, it may be as simple as a bad (defective) primer. As many billions that they make, a few bad ones are bound to get out.
