Considering building a sporter Howa Mini stock. Thought I would get some opinions from you shooters.
Thinking about keeping the butt stock the same and simply slimming up the for end.
***This model would have a free floated barrel channel that would accommodate the sporter barrel.
Thoughts?

I reckon those with the sporter barrel would be fine for it, as for me it would be a possibility is the channel could also handle the heavy barrel. Having one handle the HB would also handle the sporter and allow you a wider base of users...

More options is always the better answer.
I have the HB version so a sporter style stock isn't a need for me. But I could see where it would be nice to have that stock option if I ever decide to build anouther howa grendel and have a sporter profile barrel.

I would like a sporter stock that would fit the heavy barrel profile. My mini in 7.62x39 would be perfect with a slimmer forend.

Absolutely
For me, I would want pillars over the full block. I have a B&C 2951 for one of my Rem 700’s and other than the action holes being horribly misaligned it’s an excellent weight for a stock. After I drilled everything out and replaced the pillars it’s been excellent.
A short, light weight rifle with a 34oz stock is kinda blah.....

I would be interested in a sporter weight version as my Grendel sports the 22" barrel . I have a 20" heavy barrel ,but it's a .204 . I've been thinking about purchasing one for my 204 and see how much gap there is with the #2 contour .

I would love this stock. If possible, leave enough meat on forearm to allow for the sporter or heavy contour. Shouldnt add too much weight
ETA: Alaskan sporter style for mini would be perfect

Absolutely I would be all over a ti pattern stock for the lightweight barrel. That would be amazing.

Sporter all the way, the HB really isnt that heavy and most any stock can be opened up to fit it, I would pattern it for lightest and let people modify it (or offer as an option) the heavy profile.
Being lightweight and trim is key. The Howa Mini needs a quality LIGHT alternative in stocks. Ill take 3, or 5 if youll do a quantity discount!

Opening the channel will void any warranty. I ran into that on the 2951 stock I mentioned earlier. It has a mountain barrel profile that I opened to a sporter. The pillars were so far off the action screws wouldn’t go into the holes in the action. I called B&C and explained the issue. They asked if I had modified the stock in any way, when I said I opened the channel they said I could send the stock in and pay for repairs but since it was modified they wouldn’t just replace it.

I think Ive voided every stock warranty on well over 30-40 B&C stock then and none of them fit custom barrel profiles with any kind of straight shank ahead of the action (sporter barrels). To me opening the barrel channel is not a big deal and I think Ive done so on every Bell and Carlson stock Ive ever purchased. Bedding corrects any messed up alignment issues. Last one I did I had to mill some of the bedding block out as it was crooked in the stock. Once bedded no issues and the rifle shoots perfectly.
Wrap a tape bushing around the barrel at the forend tip after opening up channel. Adjust # of wraps until all is flat and plum. I use action screws with tape bushing so they are a snug fit through the stock holes for centered alignment and bed the action. Works every time. Ill be happy when a decent lightweight stock finally gets introduced for these rifles. They are great little guns.

I agree, but if I buy a $300 stock I’d like for the action screws to mate to the action and if they won’t sanding the barrel channel wouldn’t be the reason. You could not bolt the action to the stock. The spacing was wrong and the front was canted. I had 5 short action Remingtons and none could be bolted into the stock.
I drilled everything out and redid the pillars, bedded the action and the rifle shoots great.
Pretty much every bolt gun I own I’ve bedded.
I own several B&C stocks and I really like them. This one was just a problem child I guess.
