A friend of mine recommends running some barrel "treating" bullets through it before any "regular" ammo. Being that I'm a light shade of green at this so I'm open to recommendations of any and all kinds. It's a 24" varmint barrel setup from Model 1. Any help / suggestions would be appreciated.

If it is a decent barrel, my opinion is that it's a waste of time at best, and will degrade your barrel at worst.

I agree with blackfoot....I am especially against running any bullets through the bore if they have any abrasives on them.
I'm one of those people who think that it isn't necessary to break in a quality barrel. But keep in mind that barrel break in is a very hotly contested subject. Much like Ford or Chevy lovers.

The only time I will do a break in procedure is if a manufacturer recommends it. That way, if anything goes wrong, I am honest when telling them that I followed their instructions.

I wouldn't use any barrel treating bullets. Try some "regular" ammo, see if there is a problem. If the accuracy isn't there then maybe I'd try something like that. I agree with Blackfoot, if it's a decent barrel it's unnecessary. At first, I would clean the barrel every 10-20 shots to remove any copper fouling.

Just make sure you clean the barrel before you shoot it. Just about every new barrel I have bought has had some oil or shavings from the machining inside.

Finally had time to hook up with a guy who had experience to help me put it together. Had one small issue with a pin that holds what I believe is the hammer assembly together so I'll have to get with the supplier for a replacement. Just need to buy some ammo and mags. Comments appreciated. Thanks for your help.

I had a M700 5R milspec in 308 that shot decent but coppered real bad. The rifling looked like the edge of a bastard file in fact. I ran the 3 finer bullet sets from a tubbs FF kit through it. Accuracy did not improve, but the cleaning chores were greatly diminished. All the bullets do is slowly smooth out the chatter marks produced in a factory barrel. If it is from LW, Bartlien, Krieger, or Brux it is not needed. I say shoot it and let the results tell you what you should do. Just keep in mind that it is not going to make it shoot any tighter, unless it is rusty and pitted up, which it should not be .

Same here. I have a Remmy 700 PSS that looks like they rifled it with a brick. It shoots great though.
