Alexander Arms 17HMR

Anyone have any experience with AA's 17HMR?
I checked AA's website and at present they only offer the complete rifle. A 17HMR upper would be great.

Whelenon: I haven't used one of these yet so I can't help you there but AA has three different 17HMR uppers listed in their printed 2011-2012 catalog on pages 12-13.

The first is the standard upper- part # U-17HMR at $725.00.
The second is the MK3 Railed upper upgrade which adds the Monolithic upper receiver to the standard upper. You add $473.00 to the price of the standard upper= $1,198.00 total.
The third option is the Stalker Series Camouflage option upgrade which adds $300.00 to price of the standard upper= $1,025.00 total.
You can also get Spiral Fluting for a $30.00 option and X-Comp upgrade for $120.00 option.

You may need to call them and ask since I didn't see them on the website either.

The build is a little more complex than simply an upper swap. As such and to ensure these first units work well we have reverted to only offering rifles. This removes the variable of out of specification parts during the initial phases of sales but at the same time the user base can gain confidence that the system does work and shoot well. Equally we can gain experience of fleet data for these units without the noise value associated with stuff that does not fit or work that we did not supply.

It is undecided presently if we will revert to sales of uppers alone or not.

OK, say I buy the 17 HMR rifle will my Grendel Upper I currently own work with that lower?

Yes and no.

The lower is still a 5.56 pattern but contains the following additional parts.
1) Mag block pinned in place
2) Extended mag latch
3) Recoil cassette

To go back to shooting a Grendel you would have to remove/replace all these bits which is kind of a pain.

When we were getting into the design it was a question as to just how much we should compromise the function to make the changeover. It was a decision to make everything work well in preference to a drop in change over. The 17 HMR shoots so well that like most AR uppers it eventually demands to be a rifle.

Whelenon, I got to shoot one at the rock castle shoot. It's a very cool weapon.

also had fun when we slapped a full auto lower on a beowulf and a grendel :-)

but that 17 is fun and very accurate
