Barrel removal tool - proof of concept

So, a little history. The 12" Grrr bug bit me last year, so ordered one up (thanks BFT!), built a trued and bedded upper for the 12" and used my 5.56 pistol as a doner. Fast fwd to this past Memorial day with all the old guy tinkertoy crack on sale which, of course compelled me to buy a Spikes FDE receiver set. This required me to separate the 12" from its Permatex 24300 bedded upper.

Necessity is the mother of invention - cut a 9" section of 1/2" schedule 80 PVC, wrapped a couple sections of electrical tape around the pipe to fit the receiver's ID. Slid it in the back of my clamshelled receiver, and 4-5 hammer whacks broke the barrel free! Bob's you uncle, total tool cost, $1.43... and no parts damaged...!

There are all kinds of usages for Schedule 40 PVC pipe.
Good idea.

I did the same with a left over piece of copper pipe and some tape as well, used a bit of heat and she popped right out.

I have removed more Permatex 24300 bedded barrels from their uppers than I can remember, yet I have only had to wiggle the barrel to take them apart. The hardest upper barrel removal I have had was a ""cerekoted out side barrel extension- inside upper receiver barrel channel" that took a great deal of wiggling, but it did come apart. Heat was never used.

They've had the Upper Receiver Insert for that decades ago. Used to come with the clamshell kit.

ETA: But I will confess it took me 6 months before I knew what the darned thing was for.

I can see why. The T handle prevents the upper from being crushed when you clamp it.

The rear is perfect for tapping with a mallet for stiff barrel removal, which is what I use to remove Blue Loc-tite bedded barrels. They just pop out with a few mild taps.

Mine went missing. Not even sure where my clam shell went, have not seen it since I moved out from the Ex Wife.

I foolishly red locktited my PF Bartlien instead of blue.
