I bought one the the 6.5 LBC barrels that New Frontier Armory had on sale a few months ago. It's a type 2 barrel from what I was told. What's the difference between a type 1 and a type 2?
Thanks.
Thanks.

There are 2 types of 264 LBC-AR reamers. One has a neck of .295 and the other has a neck of .300. The tight chamber is for bolt guns and high performance AR, does not like some factory ammo. The .300 neck is for AR will shoot all factory ammo.
To determine what you have, shoot some ammo and measure the brass at the neck, it will be either .295 or .300.

My impression was that there could be two different headspaces, one for real grendel bolts, the other for 7.62x39 bolts. There have been multiple instances of confusion on this point, so I think it's more than just neck. Or maybe there are two different areas that the .264lbc chambers.

I think that some of the 6.5 variants use a standard (Type 1) bolt, where as the 6.5 Grendel and 264 LBC use a bolt with slightly different headspacing (OEM- Type 2).
CSS offers two different bolts. This is a link to the OEM-Type 2 that I assume works with Grendel and LBC chambers: http://www.competitionshooting.com/catal...ry33/p1616 Someone please correct me if I'm mistaken.

I just spoke to CSS (good folk) and was advised that there are 3 different bolts. Non -enhanced (Same depth as 223 bolt face), enhanced bolt (approx. .005 deeper) and a third that is a variation of the bolt lugs. I had to send my broken bolt in to have several measurements taken before they would send the new one.

Tony, I'm in the same boat you are. I bought one of the 264 LBC BHW barrels from New Frontier too. I called BHW and was told that in May, their supplier of barrel extensions changed to Type II without telling them. The headspacing is different between Type I and II. I spoke with Andy at BHW and gave him my serial number. He said that my barrel could be either type since it was manufactured about the time of the switch. He is supposed to be sending me both bolt types in the mail so I can test-fit them and determine which bolt I need. I'd call Andy at BHW and get put on the waiting list to receive both bolts so you can check to make sure.

Drifter Wrote:CSS offers two different bolts. It's a bit irritating that even on the CSS website with the two bolts that it can't just say Type X, for barrels with intended for use with 7.62x39 bolts. (Or xyz bolt face depth, etc). Same for OEM.... OEM what? LW? CSS? LBC, oh, you mean Alexander Arms, they who's name shall not be mentioned!

From what I am gathering is that if I ordered a CSS product or made after Oct 06 I need the type I, If prior to Oct 06 I would order a type II. YMMV

And people are ticked that Bill Alexander maintained such strict control of the Grendel name and specs! This is EXACTLY why!!

To me it's unacceptable that on web sites and even barrels that there are no markings if a mfg uses a non-standard grendel bolt (or 7.62x39).
We know it happened with Satern, CSS, and LW barrels. Hopefully they are past it, but if the problem really was a barrel extension vendor changed dimensions, this would make me think that they did not check headspace with a reference bolt, just set it up in a jig and shipped.

I picked up one of the new frontier barrels swell and picked up a les base bolt for mine and is running with no issues.

Ahhh quality control. Without it a product disappears. Good way for the competition to get rid of a competitive product.

So, is it safe to say that the dimensions of the AA Grendel bolts are consistent throughout the history of the cartridge? IOW, an AA Grendel bolt I buy today will be dimensionally identical to one manufactured 5 years ago?
thanks,
