I recently obtained a barrel with a chamber that was cut to the minimum SAAMI spec, with no freebore whatsoever. The 0.5 degree taper starts at 1.5478 from the bolt face. While this conforms to the SAAMI specification, the throat is way too tight for my needs. My gunsmith has a throating reamer for 6.5, but it uses the traditional 1.5 degree taper, which means I would end up with a Grendel II chamber after the throat is reamed. I would rather have the throat reamed with a SAAMI spec taper but my gunsmith has never heard of a throating reamer with a compound angle. Does anyone know if such a thing exists? Should I just go ahead and use the 1.5 degree throating reamer?

Ask your gunsmith to have a chat with Dave Manson at Manson Reamers (
http://mansonreamers.com). He has an excellent understanding of the compound throat and can offer good advice. More importantly, in the end, he will make the reamer to your specifications for better or for worse.
Second, since an awful lot of folks have found the SAAMI spec throat to work very well with a large variety of bullets when constrained to the AR magazine lengths, there is some curiuosity about what needs would push one to a variation.
Are you working with a bolt gun or an AR?
What bullets are you using or planning to use?
What overall length to yu plan to load your ammunition to?

This is an AR. I am shooting 108 gr scenars. My magazines limit the OAL to 2.280. The bullets touch the lands in the minimum SAAMI chamber at an OAL of 2.225.

Since the 108gr Scenar is the same profile of the 123gr Scenar, it has a secant ogive, and is one of the bullets you can normally load long, like 2.260".
It should not be jamming into anything. A SAAMI reamer from Manson itself should put the throat where it belongs, just a few tiny chips with cutting fluid, only cutting in the direction of the flutes.
Polish afterwards using longitudinal strokes and JB bore paste, clean and shoot.
