I have noticed quite a lot of brass shavings since installing the o-ring, and I can see where the extractor is scraping against the back of the brass. I expected this since the extractor with the o-ring is very tight. Is it possible I could polish the extractor to lessen this?

Yes definitely.

The corners of the claw can relieved to reduce shaving brass.

There are pictures somewhere on line that describes the rework to the extractor.
