It Has Started - 1075 tech - 10-02-2015
So, I finally am starting, slowly, to build my first Grendel.
So far, I have an Anderson Mfg forged lower, equipped with a Velocity 3# single stage trigger, KNS trigger/hammer pins, and Houge grip. The rest is standard mil-spec.
I haven't decided on a stock yet.
Future plans for the lower include a JP SCS buffer.
I have an upper awaiting a barrel. Plans are for the group buy 16", if it goes, with AP Custom handguard.
Currently looking at an AA 20" Entry at my LGS. It has the Millennium Comp on it with BCG. He is asking 799 for it which comes to almost 90 less than ordering from AA.
I have a BCM Mod 4 charging handle and a Burris PERP to go with it.
I'm open to any and all suggestions. My primary use will be hunting whitetail and woodchucks.

20" are super smooth runners when set up with rifle length tube and rifle buffer.
the 20" rifle is my favorite so far.

The JP SCS in a carbine extension tube seems to be smoother than any standard rifle buffer/spring combo I have fired to date. It feels more like a hydraulic strut/shock, than a spring on a rod.
The next best set-up for a carbine is the A5 tube with A5 buffer.
For a stock, it really should be driven by:
* your height/build
* Will family members and youth be shooting this too (if so, go with a telescoping stock/carbine extension)
* Bench rider or carry gun
The telescoping stocks offer more options when it comes to Length of Pull, ease of carry, ease of packing, fitting to cold weather gear, adjusting to the specific position you're in, etc.
The rifle length fixed stocks give the gun a more solid feel.

I installed the JP SCS and a Magpul CTR. I have a CTR on my 556 build and am satisfied with it for now. I put my 556 upper on this lower to test the Velocity trigger last weekend. Very crisp. No slack, no gritty feeling. Smooth with clean break, I like it. Love the SCS. Quiet compared to a stock buffer and spring. Ran 30 rounds through it with 1 malf that I don't believe was related to either of these components.
Still trying to decide on a barrel. And then the funds to actually get it.

20" long barrel gets long in a tree stand and heavy going up and down. Heck, my 18" got so long and heavy I went to an 11.5". I think 16" will be the length of my next deer blaster. Of course it really depends on where you hunt. Most of my shots on whitetail are < 150 yards.

In the areas I normally hunt, most shots are 100 yds or so. The last 2 years though, I had nice bucks standing out in the open at around 400. I think even with 16" Grendel this should be doable. Yes? It's nearly a 1/2 mile walk into my spot so something short and light is what I'm looking for.

Ordered the 16" fluted barrel from AA with a bolt. 26 hours of OT last week helped that out. Now to decide on a gas block. Looking at JP, SLR, and Syrac for now. I'm thinking a low profile to go under a longer handguard to give a longer sight radius if I do BUIS.

I have built multiple ARs recently in 5.56, 6.8 SPC, and 6.5 Grendel - I just took a 6.5 Grendel hunting in Wyoming (I am from GA so big deal for me!). I took a 20 inch SABRE 6.5 G rifle upper with a Primary Arms 4x14 scope and an ACE stock. Lesson learned for me is 6.5G was very effective on Antelope but I need to pull some weight off that specific rifle for long hunting treks. I will keep the upper as-is but switch to a much lighter scope, use an AERO scope mount, and switch to the lighter weight version of the ACE rifle length stock. After using adjustable gas on several builds - I am using fixed gas unless the rifle proves it needs adjustable gas.

Received barrel and bolt today from AA! Test fit of barrel to upper. It was a little snug at first and then slipped in solidly. I will look to bed it after I true the upper.

Hopefully this month will see the gas block, and gas tube. Still deciding on the block. Looking forward (December) to PF Nitrided BCG. I'll likely get it complete with bolt and that'll give me a spare. Mags I will also get from PF. Maybe the handguard in January. So by my birthday in February, maybe I'll spring for the indoor range and be able to test it out to 100yds.

Put an order in to Mark at PF for nitrided BCG and mags. He also had one of the best prices I've seen recently on a BCM charging handle so I picked that up as well.
Now I need to get a gas block, gas tube, and hand guard.
I'm thinking steel (or stainless steel) clamp on adjustable. Just trying to decide between low pro or a railed block. If I go low-pro, then I will want front adjustment, yes? SLR or Syrac are the two I've been looking at most. How would you adjust the side adjust ones if the hand guard covers it?
Does anyone have a JP railed gas block that can measure the length from the gas port back? Trying to figure which hand guard to order if I go that route.

Received BCG from PF today. Work of art! Went with SLR nitrided stainless Sentry 7 clamp on adjustable gas block with nitrided gas tube. Those should be here tomorrow. Ordered handguard from ALG Defense. No telling when I'll get that. I ordered Monday and for 3 days they were "processing" my order. Only after I emailed them did they say they were shipping it. Couldn't find an AP Custom in stock anywhere. Maybe Christmas weekend I'll be able to put it together.
Still looking for optic and mount.

Finally put this all together on Christmas. Got to go out yesterday for its trial run. Only had Wolf steel case 100FMJ and Wolf Gold 120 MPT to shoot.
Target pic is 10 rounds of Wolf Gold.
All four ASC mags from PF performed well without issues.
