Recoil Questions - Drift - 06-07-2015
I never gave much thought to the recoil from my Grendels. But now I may want to mount and hunt hogs with a Night Optic that is rated for 5.56 recoil but not higher. So I have some choices (1) use a 5.56 (2) find a way to mellow out the Grendel recoil by 3 pounds. The simple choice is to use milder loads and 100gr bullets-but I still won't know the g forces and recoil I'm generating . Another choice is using a heaver hunting rifle. But my questions is is there a simple way of doing it ... like switching recoil springs and buffer?

Do you have a good muzzle break on you Grendel...... I have never really noticed a big difference in recoil.... But I have an HBAR barrel with a 2"machined break in mine.

There was a thread that had link to a muzzle brake comparison and ther effectiveness. Do a search for it but i think the tp 3 reduced recoil by 60-70%
one of those was PF's LMD brake and its pretty inexpensive.

Elaborate on that rating, please. A 5.56 of what weight with what load. I suspect that the g forces from a lightweight 10" 5.56 with a MK 262 load is not going to be much different from an 18" - 20" Grendel shooting Hornady Factory Loads.

Here is a handy dandy recoil estimator already initialized for a Grendel load. This link takes you to the instruction page. You can go from there to the calculator proper: Velocity Estimator.
You will need to click on the "Calculate Recoil" after you've entered the data relevant to your interest.
BTW, a mention of acceleration was made in an earlier post. The utility here gives the distance traveled while the bullet is in the bore and the time taken to depart. FRom this one can calculate a = 2*L/(t*t) where a is the acceleration in ft/(sec*sec), L is the barrel length minus about 1.25" (about where the base of the bullet starts) and t is the time.

The biggest problems optics and sensitive electronic ancillary equipment have with semi-auto recoil is not just the initial recoil impulse.
It is the return-to-battery stroke of the cycle of operations of the system. When the bolt carrier slams home during chambering and locking is when most lower-end optics have a problem.
.308 self-loaders are especially brutal on optics for this reason. The more you can slow down your cyclic rate and have reliable function, the better off you are. This is a product of gassing, static weight of the BCG, spring strength, and buffer weight/segmentation.
A muzzle brake helps dampen felt recoil and muzzle rise, and does a little to keep the rifle more in a static position. What night optic are we talking about here?

You can tune your rifle further with an adjustable gas block, low mass bolt carrier group and low mass buffer. I use this setup on my 3 gun rifle and when used in conjunction with a good compensator it can reduce felt recoil quite a bit.

I hadn't considered an adjustable gas block. I'll Probably try and find a PVS 14 either a L3 tube or a ITT ONMI IV tube. Any suggestions are as always appreciated. By low mass buffer are we talking a H2 or H3 buffer? I probably will use a PF side charging BCG, so I don't think a low mass bcg is in the cards. Does anyone know anything about a flat spring to control the G forces?

As I say about my JP Enterprise Grendel...kicks like a 223, hits like a 243.
Without going super heavy, this is about as low recoil as you can get. And the action is SMOOTH.
