Upper Receiver Advise - 65Whelen - 04-24-2015
Putting together an Upper, primarily for bench fun. With accuracy in mind what receiver should I get. I'm down to the following choices:

Or, is there something else on the market I'm not aware of. Looking for the heavier, thick walled forged receiver with no forward assist. I would like a billet receivers but they are just a bit out of my price range.
Componets I already have for this build:
18" Rock Creek Barrel
JP Recoil Eliminator
12" MI Gen 2 Handguard
BCM BCG
Also, what would be the best Adjustable Gas Block that will fit under the MI Handguard?

I really like my Sun Devil Upper/Lower. A lot stronger. Can do smooth side lots of finishes and they offer an adjustably gas key also. sundevilmfg.com

I really like these. Putting together another with this upper. But, you may want a shell deflector? If not, these are very thick walled and hard to beat....

I'm a lefty, so I wouldn't want a receiver w/o the bump-out. I was just doing some reading on the M-16 history and it was stated that they added the bump-out, so lefties don't get hit with hot brass.

OK looking at billets, some are 6061 some are 7075 alum. I would only buy a forged rec. made of 7075-T6. For a billet will the 6061 material give the same strength as a 7075 forged rec.?

You can get the Vltor MUR without the forward assist for a lot less than what primary arms has it for...Tier one arms

No, but does it matter? The lower really doesn't have any stresses on it, which is why some people can use polymer lowers. 6061 is more corrosion resistent, as well. BUT, if you want the ultimate in strength for an AR aluminum lower, then you want 7075, which has almost twice the tensile strength. (70,000 PSI vs 43,000)
And because the UPPER does have stresses, you want 7075.

I just put together my 6.5 and used the Vltor MUR and like it. If I was to go for billet I would go with Mega. Will send you a link for a great price on the MUR.

I just checked out your build, very nice. That Vltor MUR looks like the ticket.
Also, the Aero Scope Mt. you used, I put one on my Carbine. Nice Mt. very lightweight, 4oz lighter than the Larue I was using.

PF was the first place I looked, I bought one of the group buy Grendel Lower from him but he doesn't have a forged upper w/o the forward assist. I'm getting picky in my old age.

I used the DPMS on my Grendel and it does fine. Here is another extruded option.
