Reading the other thread started by ThatRandomGuy, I got to wondering which would be better for me to use for my (hopefully) lightweight 16" Grendel hunting rifle build (still getting the parts to complete it).
As mentioned in the title of the thread, I have two upper/lower combos: a Mega Arms Billet Ambi and a JD Machine forged. The JD Machine is probably a little lighter weight, but is there any other reason why I would want to pick one over the other?

I have never really liked JD machine, but I have several friends who run their lowers and have never had a problem with them.

Oh, another San Diegan.
I've been reading about some of the better precision fit lowers, Mega being one of those, but I never hear anything about JD Machine, either good or bad. They're local and I traded some 22LR ammo to my boss for this lower/upper combo but I don't know what I want to do with it.
Perhaps others will have some feedback about the quality and effectiveness of the JD for a hunting grendel...

Should I maybe use the JD upper/lower for the grendel build and save the Mega for my next build, be it a long range Grendeler or a Remington 30 AR or a 300 BLK or ...?

+1 Mega Billet. Billet quality is just better. I build all my rifles with billet receivers.

If you like the ambi mag release then the Mega says it in the title. I like the fit and finish of a Mega but if its a woods hunter and you might paint it camo or scuff it up, I would use the less expensive one.
I too like the Billet Ambi Mega and I have the Forged that is a run of the mill and I really don't care if it gets muddy, dirty or scratched so I use that for hunting.

I think you mean the ambi bolt-catch release.
Not wanting to get it muddy or dirty?...Like buying an expensive 4 wheel drive and not wanting to take it off-road. I love my guns too but have to keep reminding myself, they're just a tool.
Billet is stronger than forged and implies better machining. Up to your budget but Mega has an excellent reputation. JD offers a billet version, slightly cheaper than Mega but JD does not have the ambi bolt-catch release, or the nylon tipped tensioning screw.

Ultimately, I decided to use the JD forged for my build. It's being cerakoted right now and I figured I'd save the Mega ambi billet for the next build.

Just my 2 Cents worth, But I would have used the Mega for my Grendel Build & the forged set for my 300 Blackout. But since there is paint involved, I could Not have been able to Force Myself (Under Any Circumstances) to paint that Billet Mega Machine piece!! Unless it was to ColorFill the LoGo, then & Only then could I have been able to put paint on it...
In my Humble Opinion, you made the Best choice and I'm sure that you will be Completely satisfied with your Build!!
