6.5 Grendel Savage Bolt Gun First Shots - wll - 12-13-2013
Well the Grendel shot great. The head space issue is over as far as I'm concerned. Talked to reloaders on the range today and most of them head space on their brass, they say that way they know it is spaced right for their cases in that particular rifle. I'm thinking the gauges may be on the large side as the Grendel was intended to be used in an AR, just an assumption. Cases extracted perfectly and no signs of pressure or ?, primers showed no signs of pressure either.
After bore sighting at this target at 50yds the very first shot was low and to the left in the black that you can see. I then followed the bullet hole back to the center of the bulls eye as best I could and set out to see if she would group ... what you see is a 3 shot group that measures .185 according to my calipers, I'm stoked.
Ammo was factory Hornady A-Max 123 gr fodder. No scrubbing of the bore or anything was done, I did run a patch before shooting through it just to get out any particles, or ? that might have been in the bore after manufacture.
The stock was Boyd s Tacticool that I just tightened down in steps but did not use a torque screwdriver, the screws are down hand tight using a small Brownell's handle of their gunsmithing screw driver set.
Scope is a Primary Arms 4x14 FFP
Barrel is a 28 " Douglas 7W contour, 1/8 twist McGowen.
Velocity average was ~2585
Going to another range tomorrow to go after a gong or two.

Fantastic groups there, and I thought the groups from my Mini Mauser were great. These Grendels really shoot. I have a Stevens 200 short action in .223 I am thinking about turning into a Grendel.

The accuracy makes it competitive in the competition world. The point: these qualities make the cartridge well-suited for bolt-guns and single shot rifles. I am very pleased to see the interest!
Response to first question: The .243 Win uses a .473 in bolt head. The Grendel uses the bolt head as the PPC & 7.62x39 (.441" + or -). There may be aftermarket bolts available as there are for the Savage. If not, a gunsmith can open a .223-family bolt to that diameter if the bolt is compatible with the rifle.
Response to second question: Pac_Nor (http://pac-nor.com/prefit/) offers prefit barrels for at least some Tikka models.

ER Shaw and Sharpshooter Supply makes prefits (i have barrels from both) and i am sure you can get them from some other barrel makers. Sharpshooter does take a good while tho, as in 5 or 6 months is the norm. Got my Shaw thru Gun Shack on one of their group buys. Took about 3 weeks.

Shillen makes a drop in for Savage, but alas I still have not gotten around to testing mine so I can't vouch for or denounce it yet.

Personally I like the bolt heads made by PTG. Extremely well made and fair pricing. The model needed for a Savage change out would be: PPC .442 1.00 Model SBHSA02, $49.50, you choose the right or left port and it's shipped. They are in stock.
