Why a 6.5 Grendel in a bolt action? - libertyman777 - 11-20-2013

Not trying to flame. I understand the micro action need. Small, handy and accurate. But why the big, heavy barreled Savage builds?

Is it just because the conversion is so user friendly?

I love 6.5's. I have a Creedmoor and I've always wanted a Grendel.

Is there something special about one in a bolt gun?

All input welcome.

Thanks,

Paul

To me, it makes the most sense for a lightweight hunter with a micro action and featherweight barrel.

For the target guns, you save a lot of money on brass costs, and take way less powder to shoot similar distances if you're shooting to 600yds.

Powder availability has become a significant issue for many people, and has been a factor in me shooting my Grendel more than my .260 Remington AR10.

I chose the Savage for 2 reasons:

1. Ease of barrel swaps
2. Micro actions would still be limited in COAL and not tapping the full potential of Grendel in a bolt gun (at least, that is what I concluded when looking at the options).

My Savage has DBM and I'm nowhere near the magazine limits for COAL. I've loaded 129 Interbond to 2.400 COAL in testing. Not sure what the micro actions could achieve...

Not sure I would characterize my build as "heavy barreled"...LOL

Same reason why I use a Savage SA action. Barrel swaps can be done in my garage and I have room to seat the bullet out !

Being that my gun is not a carry gun but a range gun the extra ? lbs does not matter !

Okay, that makes sense.

Concerning powder choices, what are some of the better choices for bolt actions?

Can the Savage rifles be run with 140 grain projectiles?

I think probably the two main powders used are CFE 223 and XBR 8208 with H335 and Accurate 2460 also being used among others. I believe one of the main reasons people use the Savage actions has been stated by most above as being consumer customizable
(hey Ma I used some more big words). I shoot a micro action but have a Stevens 200 in .223 (short action) waiting to be converted. You should pick up the 6.5 Grendel Reloading Manual offered on the board if you can, it has data all the way up to the 144 grain fmj Lapua.

Well I was planning in picking up a 527 in .223, shooting it a while and then converting. I think I will be better served buying a Savage and doing a conversion.

So my options are any SA Savage and swap out barrel and bolt head or get one of the Scout rifles in 7.62x39 and just change barrels, correct?

Who makes a Grendel barrel for a Savage?

Gents,
I too am interested in following this thread. Just recently, I came upon this:

http://www.accurateshooter.com/guns-of-week/6-5-grendel-f-classer-by-speedy/

The rifle has my vote on cheaper brass and less powder. I also believe, with the 6.5mm bullet, and its higher BC they should fly better.

I wonder if this round can be used in a Savage SA rifle? Reason being, the rim diameter is .441 on the Grendel; and .4728 dia on a .308. Does anything have to be done to the bolt face? Thanks, ED

If you retain the Savage 308 size (really x57 size, but anyhoo) you need to bush it a little and change the extractor. It will be so much simpler for you to buy a replacement bolt head from Savage, or from PTG.

A 6.5 G in a bolt gun makes NO sense to me at all.. Thats just like using a 300 blk in a bolt gun...

Hate to differ, but it makes all the sense, it depended on what your needs and wants are.

If you are looking for a range gun that won't burn barrels, give you enough speed to go supersonic at 1000 yards and is mild recoiling, than the 6.5 Grendel is for you. Might add the Grendel is a very accurate cartridge to boot.

If you are hunting or want more power, then no, it is not for you.

Why crawl across the 1k line when you can scream past it with other offerings like .260, 6.5 CM or the good old .284 Win which smokes ALL non magnum 6.5's

Personal preference.

That's like saying, sure I'll take the sports car, but do you have any options for less horse power?

Why a 6.5 Grendel in a bolt action? - Zach987 - 11-22-2013

I'm cheap. So I'll take the kia where i get better gas mileage even when I treat it like a NASCAR. I prefer to be called economical. :-) I have a 7mm mag and 30-06 that are great for elk and bear hunting, but wastes a ton of meat when used just on a deer. So I was looking for and found an efficient hunting cartridge. I like the AR style of rifle for target shooting, but for hunting for some reason I prefer a bolt action.

Sorry, but you are way off base.

Why use all that horsepower and burn your barrel after 2000 rounds when you can get there and have a barrel that will last 6000 + rounds.

Have you studied the 6.5 Grendel and have seen how efficient it is ? It is an amazing cartridge. Yes the 6.5x284 beats it hands down, but that is not what I'm talking about, it is about efficiency, what you put in for what you get out !

If I wanted a 6.5 that sent a 140 bullet at 3500 fps, that is a different thing, but that is not what I'm after.

Show me 1 6.5 Creedmoor or .260 Remington, or .284 Winchester with a barrel burned up at 2k rounds. I dare you...

Why a 6.5 Grendel in a bolt action? - GMinor - 11-22-2013

Anyways.. it still doesn't make sense to me.

The 6.5 G is great in an AR platform, but for a bolt gun there are WAY better choices for precision work out to and past 1k.

Why a 6.5 Grendel in a bolt action? - BjornF16 - 11-22-2013

It doesn't have to make sense to you...it only needs to make sense to the folks who want/build a bolt Grendel.

It might possibly be an economy (one set of dies; less powder; same powder as AR, etc)...or maybe just a whim. Could be a shorter action (micro action) than the calibers you listed. I imagine a .260 would kick much harder in a 6 lb gun than Grendel.

My 14.5" AR shooting 123's can reach out to 1000 ft...why wouldn't a bolt grendel with much longer barrel?

Fortunately we all have free will and can determine what's good for us individually...

ETA: 1000 yds...typo

Why a 6.5 Grendel in a bolt action? - GMinor - 11-22-2013

I am not arguing that it CAN reach out to 1000 YARDS (not feet). But it doesn't do it near as well in other offerings like the .260 or 6.5 CM. Drop is a non issue. That is predictable, 99.99% of the time. Wind however is ever changing, so shedding wind drift is of much more concern to me when I am shooting LR (which is mainly what I shoot). It is much easier to shed wind when the bullets are moving faster (less exposure to the wind).

But whatever, it doesn't make sense to me, and it never will.

Have fun with your bolt action 6.5G's!
