Does anybody have a suggestion for a flash hider to go on a Grendel that will be used for hunting? Wearing ear protection is not an option when walking around in the woods, and the muzzle brake that is on my gun right now is crazy loud.
I may just end up with a thread protector, but if there are some flash hiders out there that don't increase the sound of the muzzle blast much, I may go with one of them instead. Just looking for options at the moment.

The Vltor VC-301 look great. I don't know how well they work, but they look cool. Mine is in the mail. In stock at midway and Brownel's.
Rainier Arms sells a 9/16" version.

I second the Vortex FH if you're not planning to run suppressed! I don't like their QD design. If it wasn't for that I'd have one on all of my barrels.

Check out the video I put in that thread. As far as doing what they're designed for they're the best! They don't require a a crush washer and they're relatively cheap ($50). No tools required to install, put it on hand tight then fire your rifle. The geometry of the FH is such that the pressure leaving your barrel torques the FH on.

Depending on your threading, TA has a 5/8x24TPI, Inline brake. (All gasses are directed forward). Does a good job, and does not increase sound pressure levels behind the muzzle.

SEI Vortex is nice because it goes on hand tight, and can be easily removed / replaced for periodic cleaning with no change in POI. It does not increase noise, and does not negatively affect accuracy. The 9/16 version that fits many Grendel barrels is noticeably smaller than the 5/8 version.

if it is a flash hider and not a brake, there is no increase in noise level. Brakes divert supersonic gasses to the side, therefore breaking the sound barrier closer to you ears. Flash hiders, send all supersonic gasses to the front, therefore no change from a standard crowned barrel of the same length.

That VLTOR does look cool. I also just realized that the upper I am selling has a YHM Phantom flash hider as opposed to a brake. I might just have to switch things up.

Its wierd, i am sure the flash hider on the DS upper is a YHM Phantom, but it doesnt look lokie they even make it in 9/16-24. I wonder if that barrel is threaded different or something?

What thread pattern do you have? Make sure you aren't able to install a 1/2x28 device on a Grendel. There was someone out there making 6.5 barrels with a different chamber, using 1/2x28 threads, which is a recipe for disaster if you think about it.

Good question. I may have to take it off and measure the threads just to see.
A 1/2-28 thread on a 6.5 rifle could turn out very bad if somebody didnt know what they where doing.
On the other hand, the FH is installed and I have fired the upper, so it works. Maybe it is a 5/8-24?

I thought about it a minute and I still don't get it. Why is it a recipe for disaster? (I just got a Grendel barrel that I am pretty sure has 1/2x28 threads so I am keenly interested lol)

My bad. I just checked, the other upper has an "A2 Phantom" flash hider, not YHM Phantom. I assume made by Doublestar. Threading is 9/16-24.
Nice to know I can make the switch if I choose.

Because a lot if flash hiders and compensators have a hole made for a 5.56mm bullet. If you thread them onto a barrel that shoots a 6.5mm bullet and fire your rifle, you are in for a very bad day.

Ahhhh! Yhea...I definitely would not have thought to put one on without checking. That would be possibly expensive if you didn't for sure.

I have A2's on both of mine. I personally wear Howard Leight Impact Sport Electronic Earmuffs while hunting. I crank up the volume when I stop and it is amazing the critters I've found by doing so. When moving I turn the volume almost off. I am amazed at how much quieter I move since I started wearing them afield...... when I first started I sounding like an elephant on a rampage.

Notwithstanding the danger of using the wrong muzzle device on a 6.5mm, 1/2" is also machining more metal off the barrel than is reasonable. 1/2" (12.7mm) diameter of barrel at the threads minus the hole, 6.5mm, leaves 3.1mm thickness of metal to support a device which takes a lot of blast/pressure.
5/8*24 leaves the most barrel metal for thread-support and crown. The thickness of the metal supporting the threads on a 5/8" is 4.7mm. On a 9/16*24 the walls of the barrel are 3.9mm thick.

Shot my first 2 deer with my 6.5 last weekend... I have CustomMuzzlebreaks.com Razor brake on.. and WOW is it loud! i have to do something before next hunt.. thread protector for sure until something else!

With my less-than-perfect hearing, I have found that amplified hearing protection often provides benefits in the field.
Shooting wasn't responsible for my hearing loss, but it certainly can't make it any better. I don't take any chances anymore.

NugginFutz I don't know which did the most damage, standing in front of a Fender Dual Showman AMP plucking strings on my Hagstrom Base as a teen or all my years in the Corps but I intend to protect what little hearing I have left. It's muffs for me all the time.
