If I am running a m16 carrier, which buffer should I be running in a collapsible stock configuration?

It depends upon the variables of your setup, such as gas port hole size, type of ammo, strength of buffer spring, etc. If you're overgassed (relatively common with Grendel carbine and midlength gas systems), a heavier buffer might be helpful.

All that being said, the H3 is probably the most recommended and used with the Grendel. But that doesn't necessarily mean that it would be ideal in your rifle.

ETA- An adjustable gas block often helps to tune a setup without changing other parts of the system.

FWIW: You can get too heavy. Case in point: M16 carrier with my rifle gas/rifle buffer was a no go....couldn't get enough gas (adjustable gas block) to drive the system to reliably lock back.

ok, another question, another build, 20" rifle GS, M16 carrier, regular buffer/stock, seems to be having some slightly short stroking issues,(will eject/load fine but not getting hammer far back enough to catch disconnector) would you recommend cutting the buffer spring a bit to tune?

I would swap out the full auto M16 carrier for a semi-auto carrier before cutting springs if you think you are slightly under gassed.

Yep. Too much mass, try a lighter carrier.

Might be a good idea to check the trigger and hammer parts. Seems odd that it will load and eject without appropriate reset. Make sure that the hammer and disconnector springs are correctly installed. Try the upper with a different lower. Something seems amiss other than typical short-stroking.

Not really have seen it before, the BCG returns just enough to strip the round but wont push it back all the way.

TotT are you using a rifle length buffer and spring? or a carbine length? I have seen it happen quite a bit on 300AAC's and with the really short barreled rifles (7"-10") when people dont get the port size just right. On them the powder doesnt burn completely until its out of the barrel so it doesn't make enough gas inside the barrel. With your combo there could be a few different things going on.

1. carbine length buffer tube, Rifle Spring (Believe it or not, it happens alot especially in the military where M16A4's and M4's mingle. There was a tech sheet on it in Armorers classes. (Not MOS school but AD Armorers school)

2.Out of spec gas hole in the Barrel. way too big or way too small.

rifle buffer and rifle spring 20" lothar walther barrel.
this is during load development, a little more powder and they work fine. Only happening on the middle of the road loads with TAC and 4198 (I think, this is my friends rifle)

I have a 20" VarTac LW 223 Wylde. I had a JP Reduced Trigger Spring as my culprit to my issues at the first 50 rounds. Back to the factory spring and hammer, no issues. If I would have used a speed hammer it might have fixed it but will be just upgrading to a Geissele next. Now no cycle issue after 100 to 150 rounds with correct trigger springs.

My LW seems to be a little light on the gas too. It is much more inclined to short stroke with the faster burning powders.
