I have been trying to score an OPS-4 upper receiver for six months and have now given up. I'm ready to build my Grendel upper, v 2.0. I will build with the parts shown below:

- · JP Rifles CTR-02 Billet upper receiver with removable brass deflector
- · JP Rifles JPBC-3 Stainless Low Mass Bolt Carrier with QPQ Black Hard Coat.
- · JP Rifles JPGS-8 Low Profile Adjustable Gas System. (.936 bore)
- · Krieger 22 Cut Rifled barrel with rifle length gas system. (.093" Gas Port)
- · White Oak Armament Varmint Rifle Float Tube. Comes with a barrel nut that the gas tube passes over, not through, for precise setting of torque on barrel nut.
- · BCM Gunfighter Mod 4 Charging Handle. Machined from 7075 TJ Billet Aluminum and hard coat anodized.
- · Burris AR-P.E.P.R. Extended Scope Mount.
- · Leupold VX-2 6-18X40mm adjustable objective Target Scope with Fine Duplex reticle.
I will use my .223 lower with MagPul PRS stock, JP Silent Captured buffer spring and Timney Drop in Trigger.
I will have one more delay as I had to send the receiver back to JP and have them cut M4 feed ramps.

I got to the range today with the new Grendel upper in order to do barrel break in per Krieger's instructions. The procedure calls for 5 rounds with cleaning between rounds. Next is 3 rounds then another cleaning and finally 5 rounds and cleaning. For the last 5 I actually shot 6 as I wanted to foul the barrel before the last 5 shots. The attached target is the results of the last 5 shots which is round 9-14. The ammo was Hornady factory ammo which I wanted to try as a base line before I started handloading. The distance was 100 yards with 4-5 mph of wind. I measured the group with On Target PC software which showed the group size of .491". Needless to say, I am happy with the result. This is the second upper I have built. Looking forward to load development. I have 3 types of bullets on hand to start with. 123 gr. A-MAX, 123 gr. Scenar's and 120 gr. Sierra MatchKing's.

Last Friday I was able to take 3 of my centerfire rifles to one of the clubs that I shoot at and was able to test my calculated zero at 200 yards as well as seeing how the rifles group. I have been handloading and shooting groups for nearly 50 years but have never shot groups at 200 yards, my long range shooting being limited to Varmint hunting. I was pleased with the results I saw from all 3 rifles but particularly pleased with my Krieger barreled AR-15.

The wind was from the left and variable around 5 mph.
The load was 27.7 grains of IMR 8208 XBR behind a 123 gr Lapua Scenar. CCI 450 primers were used in the Alexander Arms (Lapua) cases. This load produces 2411 fps out of the 22 inch barrel.
I now am getting a little more amped up for a 6.5 X 47 Lapua build I'm working on so I can play some more at longer ranges. 300 yards is next not to mention some further 200 yard shooting in better weather conditions.

Amazing accuracy. No doubt that attention to detail in every aspect (selection of components, build, loading and shooting) contribute to this end result. Take her out to distance and keep us posted. On a side note, after my totally pathetic performance in the IBR last summer, I find my FJR sitting in the garage and my Grendel the object of my current affection. Course, the fact that it's 12 degrees outside right now might have something to do with that.

Great shooting and one question on the lower, who makes your lower? Is it a JP to go with the upper? Billet or Forged? and love the smiley face, needed a couple eyes for your next presentation.

Bike Effects. Very nice build, with top-quality components. Might I suggest you try some CFE223 behind the 123gr Scenar.
Find out what your max COL is with that bullet, and load as long as you can in the magazine. Hopefully you can load longer than 2.260" raw COL.
Start with 29.0gr of CFE, and load a pressure ladder from 29.0gr on up to 32.0gr, starting with .3gr increments. Once you get to 31.0gr, you can step down to .2gr increments if you like. If you are able to push out to 2.275" COL, I think you can reach 2650fps easily, and probably 2700fps. I have a 2572fps load that appears to be safe from a case volume analysis, chronograph trendline analysis, and absolutely no signs of abnormal pressures on the case & primer, although those are unreliable methods for detecting pressure (too late usually). That is from a 16" barrel, pushing the 123gr A-MAX. I suspect that I am around 48,000 psi with my 2532fps load. I am at 2.275" COL with these, as I wanted to increase case volume to reduce pressure.

I built the lower myself. Receiver is CMMG. Trigger is a Timney drop-in. Buffer is a JP Silent captured spring. MagPull grip and stock.

I have shot CFE223 with 3 different bullets. Shot 29.0 with the Lapua's and it was an .861" group. I could work with it some more but it was easy to get half or better inch groups with 8208. Mag limited to 2.250. I use QuickLOAD and it will more than likely show 32.0 grains to go over max pressure. This is a new build and I will have more time to work with it.

What mags are you using? Every CProducts, ASC, & C Products Defense magazine I own allows for 2.300"-2.305" raw maximum COL, so I like to stay around 2.285" or less, depending on staying off the lands.
29.0gr of CFE is pretty mild, so you will likely find an accuracy node as you increase velocity with OCW.
If you model QL with the 129gr SST at 31.7gr of CFE as the max, with a 2.245" COL, that should give you more room to play with cup and core 123gr pills.

I may play some more with CFE but in as much as I have 5 pounds of 8208 and 1 pound of CFE I will load some 8208 for my upcoming 200 yard Silhouette match. With 1/2 MOA accuracy, it should be adequate for this purpose.

Oh yeah. If you're shooting 200yd sils with 1/2 MOA, burn that load up daddy. No need for extra velocity at that range.
