I was able to spend some time with the Missus today, and came across an article in an area that I don't frequent in a bookstore. It is in the June issue of Harper's magazine (yeah, I don't read that magazine either, but it had an AR on the cover, so I couldn't resist).
It is not really an article on how to make an AR-15, but it does discuss how they are made from lots of modular components ("LEGO for men," I think was one of the quotes), and how almost anyone can assemble their own. The technical descriptions seemed accurate, and one point was that it would be nearly impossible to ban these guns now and ensure that nobody had one.
IMHO, the article is worth a read. You can get a teaser by browsing to http://harpers.org/archive/2013/06/how-to-make-your-own-ar-15/, but the real article is in the paper magazine.
