Woke up to the news on Fox13 this AM. Hillsborough Co Commission is hiring an attorney to investigate the legality of a weapons, magazine, universal background check. Voted on 6-1 in favor of it. Man, I sure didn't see it coming this soon. I thought Florida was pretty pro-gun. More than 1 in 20 here have concealed carry permits. I've already fired off an e-mail to all 7 members listing multiple facts about the effects of weapons bans. Last but not least told them I would do everything possible to prevent/overturn such legislation including Political activism.

Yes, I know. I am one of the few "native" floridians, born and raised. Too many, liberal progressive retirees are moving into the state. The last election proved it.
I did get a couple of replies to the emails that I sent to the commissioners. One said that he flat out voted "NO". The other said that he felt that the vote was out of respect for the board member who brought it up. News mentioned this AM that his son was killed several years ago, victim of gun violence. He also stated that the board was primarily made up of conservative republicans, and that he felt there was very little to no chance of anything being passed that would infringe on the 2nd Amendment.

Hi, I didn't see this one coming either, I live in Pinellas County which borders Hillsborough and I'm the President of the Florida Sport Shooting Association so I'll sick our legislative affairs office on them.
I don't think they have a prayer to move this forward, but Hillsborough is mostly populated with transplants from the NE states and Detroit so who knows what they will do. It's a real shame, I grew up in old Florida on a cattle ranch when men were men, but lots of things have changed some of it for the better but lots of it for the worst.
We'll see what happens.

I think if I lived in Florida I'd be pushing a bill requiring out of state residents to be a registered republican to buy land. That would stop the libtards from moving in.

I live in Hillsborough county (almost downtown Tampa), we already have a three business day waiting period for all guns, which is more strict than State requirements. I purchased an AR on a Friday, Monday was a Gov't Holiday, so I had to wait until the next Friday to pick it up. My wife has a concealed permit, so she doesn't have to wait.
I was awakened at 2:30am today by 15 rapid low caliber reports. I'm pretty sure that 6' male with dreadlocks running down my street minutes later, will adhere to new magazine laws. His first 10 shots maybe wouldn't have disrupted my sleep.
I think it's time to move out of Tampa Metro.

As an update we have alerted the Florida Sport Shooting Association legislative affairs officer who in turn alerted Marion Hammer, past president of the NRA, current executive CEO of United Sportsman of Florida, and the force behind Florida being the first in the nation for shall issue concealed weapons permits, and the first state to pass stand your ground laws. The consensus is that this legislation will go no where and if it should move forward, those passing the laws will be subject to mandatory personal fines.
I will continue to monitor and influence this issue to the fullest limitations of my station and laws governing my actions.

Received this reply yesterday from one of the County Commisioners. Looks like it is going nowhere.
Thank you for contacting my office about the separate motions regarding the violence prevention initiative and the request of the County Attorney to research a countywide ordinance banning assault weapons. Both of these motions were passed at the April 3rd Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners meeting. It is important to note that these two issues are separate from one another.
The Board unanimously approved a violence prevention initiative designed to transform the way local policy makers address violence and the detailed proposal can be viewed online. The cost of this initiative is $150,000 for consultation and facilitation services. It is funded by a victim assistance, crime prevention and youth advocacy trust that is funded by booking, subsistence and incarceration fees collected from jail inmates and convicted criminals.
The expert consultant identified to lead this initiative is Prevention Institute, a national nonprofit with extensive experience in planning and implementing large-scale community violence prevention initiatives. It has worked with 18 other communities throughout the U.S., most notably the city of Minneapolis, MN and Alameda County, CA on similar efforts, and is funded by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to help cities reduce youth violence. In 1996, Congress barred the CDC from studying guns, and as a result, Prevention Institute is also restricted from advocating for or promoting gun control.
Separate and apart from that motion and discussion, Commissioner Miller brought forward an item that was not on the agenda. Commissioner Miller requested that the County Attorney research whether the County can pass an ordinance to ban the sale of assault weapons, ban the sale of high-capacity ammunition magazines, and require background checks on all gun sales. The Board approved his request for information by a 6-1 vote.
The County attorney has already issued his legal opinion, which states: “Accordingly, I do not recommend proceeding with County action banning assault weapons or high capacity magazines or testing whether magazines are within the scope of the term firearm, or components thereof, in Section 790.33, Florida Statutes.” It concludes that “(1) the County is clearly prohibited from banning assault weapons, (2) the County does not have clear authority to bank high capacity magazines and (3) the County has limited authority to require criminal background checks as provided in the Florida Constitution. The County has already adopted an ordinance requiring background checks and waiting periods pursuant to the Florida Constitution.” The full report will be presented at the April 17 Board Meeting.
