16in Satern Barrel Accuracy? - Coyoteslayer88 - 02-19-2013 I expect to be getting my grendel in a trade in a few days, it has a 16 in satern barrel and have been wondering what kind of accuacy and range i can expect from it? 16in Satern Barrel Accuracy? - mongoosesnipe - 02-19-2013 more than likely better than you will be able to shoot it satern make a fine product 16in Satern Barrel Accuracy? - LRRPF52 - 02-19-2013 Satern barrels are cut-rifled, and at least one of the forum members has one that is 14.5", and it shoots some loads into .5" or less. I have an economy button-rifled pipe from AA, 16" length, that consistently shoots from .8 MOA to 1.2 MOA, no matter what I shoot through it. So best groups I have had at 100yds are .79", and at 200yds have been 1.69", while worst at 100yds have been 1.2", and 2.2" at 200yds. Your Satern barrel should shoot better than that, but you'll find out soon enough. 16in Satern Barrel Accuracy? - Lead Chucker - 02-20-2013 It should shoot great as said above! I have a 18" satern that shoots 1/2" or better at 100yrds. I put together a 16" stoner barrel in December that shoots 1/2" also, so your satern should produce some great groups! 16in Satern Barrel Accuracy? - joker31 - 08-28-2013 My custom Profiled 18" Satern shoots better than my 223 Kreiger. I fired my first 4 shots and then shot the "Enemy at the Gates shot" Through the scope through the eye at 100m. I know thats not a good judge but I had a hard time previously trying it with my 260 remington bolt rifle. So...Yeah they are shooters. 16in Satern Barrel Accuracy? - VASCAR2 - 08-28-2013 Plus a 16" barrel will keep the bullets super sonic a long way out there depending on your bullet weight and velocity. I've shot my 16" barrel to 800 yards and the factory 123 grain A-Max is still super sonic to 1000 yards. 16in Satern Barrel Accuracy? - Tedward - 08-28-2013 I was discussing this barrel length and accuracy with my co-worker who is a graduate from Marksman Collage. He said you will have great results with the 16" due to it being less time for the human error to affect the barrels accuracy. What he means is if you have a 24" barrel, as you pull the trigger, the bullet is in the barrel 40% longer which gives you 40% more chance of moving causing the bullet to go off target. For anything other than bench shooting or prone, the 24" barrel will move making you less accurate. The Grendel is so fast that before YOU have time to affect its accuracy in a 16" barrel, its out of the barrel and your flinch will not affect its course. So longer isn't always better, depends on the conditions. 16in Satern Barrel Accuracy? - cory - 08-29-2013 Assuming the bullet is traveling 2600 fps. It takes an additional 0.000256 seconds or 0.256 milliseconds for the bullet to travel that additional 8". That's not enough time to amplify human error to the point it's noticeable. 16in Satern Barrel Accuracy? - Tedward - 08-29-2013 cory Wrote:Assuming the bullet is traveling 2600 fps. I agree with what your saying but the bullet is not traveling 2600fps at 6" in the barrel. It is picking up speed from 0 to the end of the barrel. At 6 inches it is not as fast as it is at 16" and again is increasing in speed to the 24 inch mark. Between 16' and 24" is 40% more barrel travel to increase the speed. Anyhow, I won't contend this issue but just passing on what a Marksman said. That is why they have different length barrels for different applications. 16in Satern Barrel Accuracy? - Tedward - 08-29-2013 cory Wrote:Assuming the bullet is traveling 2600 fps. So if the rifle is resting on a bi-pod in the front and you do not firmly support the rifle from moving after the round is ignited, the bullet moves so fast that it doesn't matter if the gun moves? (from recoil) It's already out the end of the barrel at that point??? It does matter and that's the human factor. The rifle must be firmly supported for your .256 milliseconds. The time you must support the rifle is less on a 16" barrel than on a 24" barrel. No Assuming. You have no factor for bullet travel start up speed and recoil affect in that mathematical figure you stated.. me.cory (Mechanical Engineer) you should know better than that.

HAHA Engineering always starts with several assumptions and a model that's simplified as much as possible. I'm not saying the human factor doesn't matter. It most certainly does. What I'm saying is if you jerk when you pull the trigger, that extra 8" isn't going to magnify your error to a noticeable level. You're still going to see an error from your jerk just not anymore of an error from a 24" barrel than you would from a 16" barrel. 16in Satern Barrel Accuracy? - Tedward - 08-29-2013 cory Wrote:HAHA Engineering always starts with several assumptions and a model that's simplified as much as possible. I feel the same way but my Engineer here at work disagrees. I don't know either way but wanted to throw the Engineer comment out there, I always do it here at work to my young guys with there degrees. I was just messing with you on that note and glad you took it that way, keep posting talk soon....
