Chris Kyle, credited with 150+ sniper kills, and thus the most prolific officially credited sniper, was killed Saturday at a gun range in Texas. He and good friend, Chad Littlefield, had apparently taken another veteran to the gun range to help him deal with PTSD, when Eddie Ray Routh turned the gun on them and killed both.
Kyle wrote the book "American Sniper" detailing some of his time in the military, and some of the missions he was part of. He served 4 tours in Iraq on Seal Team 3, and became known as the "Devil of Ramadi". His shooting in Ramadi and Fallujah in support of the military pushes there was legendary.
Kyle earned 2 Silver and 5 Bronze Stars for valor exhibited on his missions.
RIP Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield.

I read his book and recommend it highly. His interviews showed him to be a real, no nonsense humble man. I hope to see a fund set up for his wife and child.

He and his buddy were contributing to the greater good even at the end -- even though this time it did not work out the way they had hoped.
Obviously I've never met him but will miss him anyway.

I just met him and talked for a while at SHOT Show down in Vegas. He was escorting Marc Lee's mother, Debbie Lee, around the Convention Center. Marc Lee was the first SEAL to die in Iraq. She started a project: America's Mighty Warriors, and was most gracious. She asked if I had served in the military, and upon my answer in the affirmative, handed me two cards. One thanked me for my service, the other honored the ultimate sacrifice of her son. I was speechless, and was overcome with gratitude for her sacrifice as a mother. I didn't know what to really say to her, but she looked like she knew.

Chris Kyle was totally down-to-earth, humble, and a blend of a Texas country boy and a gentleman. I was interested in his perspective on how they re-vamped the SEAL Sniper Course, as described in Brandon Webb's book, and he confirmed the details therein. I asked him if they really finished it up with a hunting trip up in Washington, and he confirmed that they did. I was also curious about what rifles they used on the game, and what types of game. He answered that they used the .300 Win Mags mostly, and were shooting deer at distance.
I had an all-around very good impression of him, and he was more than personable to me, taking his time to converse and not doing the usual "dodge 'em, turn your back because your on a tight schedule" behavior. He genuinely seemed like the kind of guy that would make a one-of-a-kind friend.
While many SEALs can be very exclusive and cold to outsiders, Chris was one of the ones who was warm, open, and just a friendly guy. I have nothing but good things to say about him. This came as a complete shock. We lost a good dude today...

I read his book immediately on its release, initially to see if I could glean any knowledge on long range shooting, then became caught up in the struggles that our warriors face.
He struggled with leaving the Seals, dealing with family life, and overcoming the difficulties that often befall those who see so much combat time. But the book pulled no punches, portraying him as he was, warts and all. He established a training business, and seemed to be making the shift to civilian life, while still keeping contacts in the military.
My take away from the book was that he was as LRRPF52 describes him, a good guy, like most of us who love our country.
We indeed lost a good one!

I attended a memorial service for another Seal Thursday evening. He started during Vietnam and went on to do more interesting stuff until Parkinson's got him.
He was both approachable and extraordinarily helpful.
I will miss him too.

Some of the comments from the left/anti gun types have really been disgusting.
No telling how many American and allied lives Chris saved.
I think the most heartbreaking story he told in the book was about running out in a street to try to drag a young Marine to cover who had been gut shot. The kid said "don't tell my momma I died in pain" and died in his arms.
Chris was still trying to drag the wounded to cover when he died.

It was extra shocking to me cause Chris was killed just 15 minutes from my house in Erath county. In fact the nut job who shot him is sitting in the Stephenville jail just up the road a bit. At the same time this took place i was helping my daughter break in her new Grendel in our pasture... sad, so sad... and frankly needless.

"Nut Job" is an interesting description for those of us who either have suffered or are suffering from PTSD.
If this guy really has the disorder, he deserves our sympathy too.
The main thing is find ways to identify and treat. Then isolate those for whom the treatment doesn't seem to work.

My service was in Nam and during a gathering of the surviving members of my unit years later we made a pact to always toast "to absent companions" on the Marine Corps Birthday. In addition I make this toast silently each day as I savor my first cup of coffee. "All gave some. some gave all!"

Every Marine Corps Birthday a lot of us Marine Vets in the Huntsville, AL area get together, normally at the local hooters, and celebrate. When the first two Marines show up one buys a beer and one buys a shot of whiskey. It sets until the last two Marines that are left toast to our brothers and sisters who couldn't celebrate with us.

War was always described as Hell-yet the PTSD is a Hell that returns home w/ the warrior. Very Sad that those guys were taken out -yet it reminds us all -the brain is only so strong-things happen to change brain functions and must be pre-emptively dealt with. If anyone here knows of a vet in need-try to help them.
Chris, and his friend will be missed by all of us true Americans.

He was on TV a few times-great guy.

Just curious, and maybe I'm wrong...why does there seem to be more PTSD issues in post Korean War conflicts as opposed to before?
I suspect we'll learn (eventually) that Routh was on some type of psychotropic medication, having been in mental health ward a couple of times after leaving the Corps. This is a terrible tragedy and I'm afraid may affect others trying to help our veterans.
