First "Grendel" Deer - bugboy - 11-26-2012
Just got back from shooting my first "Grendel" (actually a .264LBC) deer. A 10 point whitetail with 2 stickers from about 200 yds. I lost the deer under recoil, but once back on target I saw the doe running off. I started scanning with binos and found the buck standing about 50 yds from where I first shot him. Fired a second shot (about 260 yds) and put him down on the spot.
I gave the deer to some neighbors so I didn't get a chance to do an autopsy but it appears the first shot entered the shoulder and didn't break the bone. The second shot smashed the other shoulder. I have no idea of what the bullets did inside the body. Very small entrance wounds (had trouble finding the entry locations) and no exit wounds. I may have to look at a different bullet for next year. I'll see what happens for the next couple before I decide.
I was shooting 123 Amax handloads @ about 2650fps.
My guess is the second shot may not have been necessary,,,, he might have been dead but just didn't know it yet, as he was just kind of standing there. Anyway, if they aren't down and I have a shot, I take it.
Now it is time to start working on the doe population.

2650 fps is pretty hot (and awesome) What is your barrel length?

They just came out with the Hornady 123 SST, should be far better than the A-Max. Good hunting, congrats. No pics? bumber!

Nice, pics? Not to argue with you but ive shot 5 deer and a coyote with my 20" Grendel and the 123 gr Amax. Im all for the 123 gr SST's so dont misunderstand what im saying but the Amax is a bad mamma jamma!
