The deer was taken--by me in a hurry.-It came in way out of field, by the time I scoped him up------- I had to decide real quick.
He was doing the classic -lip curl. His nose was in a straight line w/ his spine-headed towards me, on a trail heading down hill-slightly. I was in my sons stand-20+ ft. up. His mouth opened at the shot-the only opportunity I had in the the thick under brush in N. Mn. I saw a small 3-4" window, went for it. The 94 gr. GMx <I planned for it to hit him in the back of throat = spine shot=drt. The small branch helped to miss the intended spot. Hit him in the rear( inside jaw hinge area,)) bullet spiraled side to side-after a path thru the jug. vein-wind pipe, neck muscles- a few vertebraes etc. When I found him-75 yd away, he only struggled for 10-15 seconds-he was red from nose to horn to shoulder- blood spray thru nostrils. I'll carry this one w/ me forever. My pal arrived to help, he said-wheres all the blood sprayed all over the place you spoke of? (it was hideous)-I reminded him-be happy today that you are red , colorblind. We rinsed as best as poss. =ABAP- for a pic. It was 34° F outside, I was in a t shirt cleaning him out-sweating big time. Blade & I had a 300yd drag-over logs , brush. Proccessed the unit last nite==84lbs. of fine venny. We had the camera in the trailer, -so it became clear to gut the deer first- that's why it looks bad.

John, I think it's all in there. It was a tough choice-had to do it, it's the only deer seen between the 3 of us guys all -3 day wknd. Too many T wolves around, kinda creepy-I can hear them running around-near me.

That GMX certainly has opened him up. 84Lb for the freezer is a good start for the for the year. Experience sure shows when a take it or leave it shot presents itself. How long is your season there? How many times do you get to go for a hunt. Do you have a chance to thin out the wolves or are they on the greenies leave it alone list.

This year my hunting party and I drew our second choice for deer in a unit that is very tough to scratch a buck out of unless you get some weather. It’s one of the only units that never fills on the first draw as everyone knows it’s a bitch to hunt. Opening morning I chose to sit and wait in the hope that someone would get the deer moving and sure enough another hunter bumped two bucks right into my lap so my season was over by mid-morning. The rest of my party spent a total of 22 man days in the same unit and saw a grand total of one three point the entire time… which they never got a shot at. I’m not an advocate of taking risky shots or launching any “Hail Mary’s” at big game but in some of the Oregon hunting units you had better be able to take advantage of an opportunity as they can be few and far between.

Von, it looks bad because we already cleaned him out. This is the first deer I shot that the bullet never touched a hair going in, plus no exit wound. I felt I did the right thing, if for no other reason-he does not have to be chased by wolves anymore. Death is part of life. I was taught that at age 6 when I got to shoot my first ruffed grouse,aka= partridge. Our deer season in my zone is 2 full weeks-= + the 3 wknds. Some of the anti group call us weekend warriors, after the old ted nugent song- plus we don't care of the great north country woods. I grew up -there. When I lived there my dad took me out--2-5 times a week, if nothing else, at least for taget shooting. I love the wooded section -northern mn. It's maybe close to Rasp's Maine, & John's Oregon-- as far as the forest is viewed. Von, on the 1st wkend-we go for a 3, or 4 day hunt. The 2nd wknd. is a ??? should we go? Or not-depends a bit on the weather, and many more variables in there., 3rd wknd.==if we need to fill tags-look out, they don't call me the terminator as a joke. My fed. pal only gets 2 wknds. off=1st, & last. We can't legally touch the wolves, ( they allowed 400 to be hunted-out of 13,000) most hunters here don't care anymore-we are getting feedback-no deer seen, only wolf sign. I have lots of rounds good to go-problem is-never see them in the daytime. I'm going to change that. Thanks for helping w/ the pic. I couldn't drag it from my album.

John, I hunt in the nasty part of the woods, we call it HELL. =Very thick-too much brush to even fathom a shot for most guys. Small skinny aspen trees pop up every couple of inches- I equate it to shooting thru Gortex- or Kevlar. Trust me - I had the shot- I never do a hail mary lobb. The trail cam- a first for us! Was put out near the stand on Oct. 14. On Oct. 26-&31 @ 5 & 6 am the bruiser showed up-total dark-saw the horns. So I guessed it correct by the 5 day return policy. I got lucky-I showed up at 7:45 am ( lazy boy) and settled in.- 30 min. later the deed was done. I'm fine with it all now. Deer get hit by cars-semi's - trucks etc. Many suffer longer than this one did, by the roadside, in the ditch.,,,, he was gone in a few seconds. Btw., it sucks seeing no game to choose from to whack. I can only hope to try again at a deer this wknd. This time I'll bring the 110 Interbond.

Would be real interesting if you were able to get a shot with the 110gn IB at some distance just to see how it performs. Most anything will do it up close --providing you miss all those trees in the way of course. Hard to understand a 2-3 week deer season but we all have constraints we must work within. Do you have other table fare you can hunt without going long distance and are they all in the getting tags ballot system?

Von, the only other game up north is rabbit, and grouse. In the metro here-unlimited antlerless tags, problem is finding a spot. I may have an opp. to bow hunt in the western metro- 120 acres-private land. So if no luck this or next wknd. -I'll freeze, but I'll bow hunt there. There is a spot near Mille Lacs lake that I want to look at-it's only an hour drive from here. The Mn DNR sold 6000 wolf tags this first year of hunts-get this, they will only allow 400 to be taken! Only in america....

Thanks L52. I tried to bring this from my album, wouldn't go... My comp. is too constrained-or I clicked on ?? Bwild sent me a tutorial in June- it's in my area just by the albums... message sent-stuck on? So I tried it, nothing. My comp. whiz son is never around to help . Help! Btw, a few have asked- about the mag. in the pic=it was cut down from a crap cprod. 25 rnd. unit -from 08. Bill A knows this is the only way to make a 17 rnd. unit work = The curve has to be built into it. It is awesome=-it's my main hunt mag. from here on out. The 10 rndrs. are in the pack.. , for a backup unit's. The extra grip surface is nice- we wear big gloves in Nov. here.
