Advice on AR for hunting - Y85 - 09-21-2012
New to the forum and would appreciate some advice. I am looking to get an AR-15 in 6.5 Grendel for hunting. I want something fairly light so I can carry it around after antelope but with a barrel long enough to allow me to take it to Canada if I choose (I think the rule is >18").
Would it be better to buy a 5.56 and get a 6.5G upper? I've got a DPMS LR-338 but nothing in the AR15 platform. Or would it be better to just get the 6.5 complete?
I don't want to build it from the ground up and I'd like to keep the cost $2K or less (with adjustable stock and a trigger upgrade)
Suggestions on manufacturers? Models? Any ones I should avoid?

I built my DPMS AR 15 lower for under $160.00, it wasnt that hard. You can build your upper with an 18" Alexander Arms lite barrell for under $500.00 or just buy one assembled from AA Or from a place where i got my2 Grendel uppers called J & t distributors. I think you're looking at approximately $750.00 from AA or about $650.00 from j & t with a stainless bull barrel but they dont flute barrels so if you're looking for something on the lighter side you better gowith Alexander Arms. On a side note AA is the Company that came up with the 6.5 Grendel but like i said ive got 2 J & Ts. The SS bull 24" is a tack driving machine out to 500+ yards. The new 20" ive only shot out to 300 yards (the first day i shot it) so im expecting great things from my new deer rifle in grendel. One thing you did mention was you wantedsomething light and i can tell you my 24" Grendel is as heavy as my DPMS .308 20" CLASSIC AR but it also has the Magpul PRS STOCK, bottomline its heavy. The 2nd one i just thru on my old telescoping milspec stock with a Nikon Prostaff 4-12-40 bdc and barrel at 20" its much lighter. Good luck.

re Canada: I hunted Vancouver Island (bear) June 2011 with the DPMS 338. If memory serves, barrel length and total length were prescribed. AR-type semiautos were left to the discretion of the Customs agent, not prohibited but not a rubber stamp like a bolt gun. It also (probably) depends on where you enter the country. We flew into Campbell River and actually called a few weeks in advance and talked to the Customs agents who were extremely nice and helpful. Just have the importation form filled out in triplicate but not signed and no problems. I would not even think of trying to bring an AR in through Vancouver or Toronto.
Back on the Grendel rifle, I'm a hunter not really a target shooter so I am most interested in weight and accuracy at ethical hunting distances. I would rather spend a day crawling closer than taking too long of a shot. That being said, if I have no choice but to shoot longer ranges, I would want to be prepared. From reviewing the ballistic data, I would think - with the right load - the Grendel would be ethical out to 500 yds on antelope. Does that seem reasonable? I wouldn't plan to use it on elk at distance, or even mule deer. I do my whitetail hunting in the Midwest and 300 yds is further than I've ever seen a deer.
I like idea of getting a DPMS lower and a AA fluted upper. Does anyone have any experience with the DPMS Oracle lower (or even the complete rifle)? Pretty good price point, and I've been pleased with my 338Federal.
Any other advice is appreciated.

If I'm not mistaken your 338 Fed is on an AR-10 platform so mating a Grendel upper is out. With regard to "ethical" then you'd be served well by a light-weight 16" Grendel as it will do all and more out to 300 meters which seems to be the maximum humane range to take a shot at game by popular conscientious.

Sorry, too many plane flights and too much IPhone typing. You are correct, my DPMS 338Fed is AR-10, not compatible with Grendel. I was wondering what folks thought of the DPMS Oracle lower (5.56) as a base for the AA fluted Grendel upper (too keep the weight down). I don't have a 5.56 (yet) & I was going to try to convince my bride that I had to buy a complete 5.56 rifle so I could put the 6.5G upper on it.
Along those lines, what type of trigger to you all prefer for a hunting AR-15? Do you prefer muzzle breaks on 6.5G?

Don't know about the Lower but you can't go wrong with the AA Upper. For the Grendel I think a 400yd well placed shot would be an ethical hunting shot.

A friend of mine has his Grendel upper on a DPMS lower which fits and functions pretty well.
I prefer a single stage trigger and get all my trigger work done by Bill @ http://www.triggerwork.net

I bought a DPMS classic 20'' rifle (A2 stock) and use that lower with my 20'' grendel upper. The DPMS lowers are good to go- except the stock trigger sucks- I now run a Geissele (spelling?) SSA trigger and love it.
The DPMS 5.56 upper shoots awesome for me (using my reloads) and it's not even free floated. When I switch to shoot the grendel upper, I used to switch buffer springs to a heavier wolf spring ( like 12 bucks I think) but now I have a JP rifles
captured buffer spring to try out- It should smooth things out with the heavier bolt carrier weight of the grendel upper. I guess it depends on which length Grendel you go with as to which 5.56 rifle you should buy (rifle, midlength, carbine).
If you need an excuse for the "wifey" as to why you need the 5.56, it's cheaper to shoot that and keep in practice! Also, 20 round Pmags for the 5.56 fuction fine for me with grendel if I don't put more than 5 or 6 rounds in there.
Regarding muzzle brakes: they are great for target shooting, but you'll go deaf hunting with them- maybe you could just go with a flash hider style device if your main focus is hunting.

Great stuff -- didn't know about the JP SCS - looks like a good addition to my 338 as well (a little raspy, although more accurate than I am). I'm afraid the wife is catching on to the expanding gun safe, sad to say. Good news is: two of the kids are hunters so "I'm getting the new gun for them" works sometimes.

Ive shot a deer out to 250+ and dropped him right where he stood. I caught a boar staring a little to long, popped him at 400 yards (both with 123 gr Hornady A-max). Ive seen a few here that didnt like the Amax for longer distances on whitetails but it was devastating on the one i shot as well as the boar. Is a 300-400 yard shot humane? Absolutely. 500 yards should be no problem for thin skinned game.
I dont have a muzzlebrake on my 2 Grendels because i have bull barrels so i cant really suggest one to you but the Grendel is so smooth and mild mannered you really dont need one in my opinion. I dont have the Oracle lowers but i have 3 DPMS lowers and they all work great but ive yet to break down and buy my Timney triggers for my Grendels, consider the Timneys for whatever AR you have.

Y85, I have a Timney in my Grendel and love it, PN#668-S, 4lb pull. I also use a WCI compensator,you can watch the bullet hit the target with it.

Ok - so I think I'm gonna go with an AA with an 18" barrel. Anybody have experience with or thoughts on the Gissele SSA for hunting applications. AA doesn't offer a Timney upgrade so I thought I might try the SSA. ?i've never used a 2-stage trigger for hunting -bad idea or no?

I really like the 2 stage over single stage...but, that is personal preference (I suspect it is 50/50 here). I have both SSA and SSA-E in Grendels'.

If you plan on walking more than a couple of hundred yards from your vehicle think 'light.' Monster bull barrels are sexy tack-drivers but pretty soon they get left at home. Whatever barrel you decide on, think about a lightweight handguard. Here is my favorite: http://www.apcustomusa.com/ar15.html

I have the Rock River 2 stage trigger on mine and its great.
As far as a muzzle break goes, I don't see a need. I was able to watch my pronghorn rise up after the slug impacted then fall and roll down the slope as his heart beat its last. The recoil is nothing as far as painful recoil goes. If you were shooting long range targets I guess it would help, but for hunting I see no need.
BTW mine is a 20 inch fluted Sabre barrel and I carried it several miles while I was scouting and during the actual hunt and I didn't have a problem with the weight. I have liighter rifles, but it isn't near as heavy as the 24 inch of my buddy's.
