Need help I have a AA24 inch barrel riding a rock river arms lower, also a Nikon Monarch 4-16x42 scope attached by a rock river arms solid piece cantilever scope mount. Today I went to the range first time with it so I started at 50 yards I also should say the scope and mount were on my 223 and it was dead on. Im a foot low and the elevation is maxed out do I just need to buy a shim for the rail and if so what type. Tried her at 100 and same thing foot low need some ideas on how to fix this. First I thought my the elevation spring was stuck but the recital moves just fine.

yes its maxed out and still a foot 10 inches low

And you turned it counter clockwise, correct? That would move the reticle down in its travel. Most get confused with the adjustment being point of impact, not point of aim.

Then you are beyond a shim to fix. That would amount to a shim of .045" just to get where you could shoot to a couple hundred yards. Looks like either a scope problem or a mount problem. Most people turn the turret clockwise thinking that is the correct way to move the turret down and it moves the impact down.

Doubtful that a lower mount would help significantly.
You would have to do the math to figure out if it would work for your intended use, but a mount with 10 or 20-moa of cant built in would raise your POI. I think LaRue and ADM, among others, offer mounts with built in cant.

+1 on drifters advice. Get a mount that is lower and with 20 moa built in. that should help. Its still strange that the scope doesnt have enough adjustment for 100 yards.:confused:

I wouldn't give up on shims yet. Before spending money on a new set-up try shimming both front and rear rings. If it doesn't work, your out the cost of shim stock and time.
But first, I would want to identify what's wrong? Is it the scope, scope base or maybe something with the rifle itself?
Check the scope for total elevation. How much does it have and what does Nikon says it's suppose to have? From the top of elevation turn it down all the way, counting clicks as you go. Figure out how many MOA of adjustment you have, is it what Nikon advertises? You could also check the base with a good level, preferably a machinist level. Take the base off the gun, put the rifle in a gun vise and level the receiver. Now put the scope base back on the leveled receiver, with the top rings off you should be able to put the level on the top of the front and read lower rings. How does it compare? If it's obvious the scope base is off contact RRA or whoever you got it from.

Did you try a level? The top of the rings should be parallel with the receiver.

Have you tried another scope? different mounts?
If it does this with other mounts and scopes, what are the chances that the extension is a loose fit in the receiver and the barrel is sagging? Did you do the Locktite bed with the muzzle down? Something to look at I suppose.

For my long guns, I always go with a MOA cant base, usually 20 MOA for cartridges with similar ballistics to the .308 Win. With the scopes that are quality units, but under $1000, you rarely see them with more than 68 MOA total travel, while the higher-end scopes with 90-100 MOA will run you well over $2000 usually.
Looking at your rig, I'm also wondering about:
* how the barrel is installed (Someone painted the barrel and JP handguard piece, and those handguards are not common to AA.)
* Is the muzzle device threaded on true?
* Is the crown damaged?
To be consistently printing low like that indicates there is something awry with the configuration of the upper, since your .223 upper was dead on. I think you need to break it down, and see that the JP barrel nut was installed correctly, as it is quite different than a standard AR15 barrel nut in that it has external threads that engage the extension piece that is painted on yours. That piece threads onto the upper receiver threads like a barrel nut, but has internal threads inside for the JP barrel nut to thread into.
I have installed several JP handguards myself, follwoing their directions, and they are great handguards.

Would removing muzzle device be a quick check to eliminate that as an issue? Would give you a good view of crown, as well, and the muzzle 'star' left behind after firing a number of rounds. Brownells sells a muzzle crowning tool that could be a relatively easy fix, with minor smithing skills.
