First off,
I'd like to say hello to everyone on the the forum as this is my first post! I recently finished my rifle about two weeks ago and was invited out to an NBRSA 1000 yard competition as a guest in Tucson Arizona Yesterday.
The conditions were low 80's, rain (which is odd for AZ) and high winds (10-15mph gusts).
I was shooting my 20" Schneider barreled AR15 with a head spaced AA bolt and factory Hornady 123gr AMAX.
First off, I am by NO means, a professional shooter. This was my first time shooting past 300 with this particular rifle. I had it fitted with a U.S Optics SN-3 and a 0 MOA riser.
For some reason I was tapped out on elevation adjustment and still holding over 18-18.5 MOA on the reticle by the end of the day. Shooting from prone using a sandbag up front and a bunny bag in the back.
Most of the day I spent trying to figure out my elevation issues because we were unable to see bullet impacts in the dirt due to soggy ground conditions and unknown bullet drop.
Long story short, I was able to post a 21" group (it was by far the Indian and not the bow) which I guess I'm happy with.
After my less than amazing performance yesterday I am really looking forward to going back next month and hopefully posting a better group!
The reason I'm posting is because I would like to start loading up some custom loads for these 1000 yard meets and I was wondering if anybody has some tips/tricks they don't mind sharing with me.
Any other advice for a newbie would be HIGHLY appreciated.

Welcome. That rifle looks sweet. I would recommend getting a 20 MOA cant scope mount, such as the LaRue LT-112 or similar. Take her out to 600yds first and get used to drilling it there, then ease forward.
There has been a lot of recent progress made with CFE223 powder and the heavier pills, like the 129gr Hornady SST, 130gr Norma Golden Target, and 130gr Berger VLD fed from modifed mags that allow a longer COAL. A PRI 6.8 mag will allow 2.3+ COAL, and I would get a 10rd model for this purpose.
Run a ladder test with your loads at 200yds to find your accuracy nodes with the higher BC pills. BWild97 achieved 2700fps from his 24" with the 130gr loaded long on top of CFE223, so a 20" could get at least 2500fps, if not 2620fps with the longer COAL that allows more powder. You won't be as competitive as a 6.5/.308-based case, since they push the 130gr and 140gr pills much faster, but it will be closer than a 123gr at 2500-2600fps.

20moa would solve your 1000yard problem. The 30mm tube USO's only have 60moa of adjustment in them and the 35mm tube's have aroun 80 in them. So if you use up 40 or so moa to get the zero, it will leave you short.
I am one in support of a ladder test but feel it is only accurate beyond 300 yards as it develops the node more readily. I normally do them at 500. My preference is not in the heavy pills with the Grendel but with the 108 scenar. The only feasible heavy would be the 130 jlk if you could get them to 2650 or faster and then it still only barely beats the 108scenar at a reasonable (in a 20") 2780 fps, mine is also a 20". But at closer distances, the 108 out shines the heavier pills in everything but energy and paper does not take that much energy to put it down.

Thank you for all the replies! I have been doing some reading alot on this new CFE223 and it looks to be pretty promising. I have also seen alot of poeple using 2520 with great results. My intent is to see how far I can take the Grendel with the 1000 yard matches to see exactly how competitive it is with the bigger calibers. So far I'm off to a some what decent start. Anybody have any good trigger reccomendations? I was giving the American Gold trigger some serious thought.

The only problem I see with CFE is the temperature sensitivity. Velocity and pressure are both good to go. I played with it this weekend. If you left the cartridges in the sun, pressure was unacceptable and cratered the primers. Wtih the cartridges at 65 degrees, no problems. If you keep that in mind, you will be good.

It's going to be a hot one this summer so maybe I'll run a reduced load until the winter rolls around? I'm interested in running the 130's but I'm really looking for the best performance from 600 to 1000yds and I havent been able to find alot of load data for them at those ranges. I have some factory amax I run for plinking but the rifle will mostly be used at as many competitions as I can get in on.

I found my rifle prefers 123 smks over 123 amax past 300 yards. The smks smoke them in group size for my 20" setup. I know a lot of the guys play with 107 smks and 108 lapuas for 600 plus. Can't comment on those loads but try smk 123 with xbr 8208. My rifle likes 28.3 gr seated at 2.230. Good luck in your quest for the perfect primer, powder, bullet, col length : ) and welcome aboard!

Thank you guys for all the advice and help you've given me so far! Ill try those 123's at 500 and see what I can get. Those PRI mags seem like a pretty interesting idea. I really like the idea of using the vld's and feeding them from a mag instead of single feeding.
On a side note: I am really enjoying the polygonal rifling in this Schnieder barrel. Its a riot!

I tried the 130 berger and jlk, not able to push them fast enough to make use of the bc. The higher bc of the big pills is great except the Grendel can not push them fast enough to stay in the higher bc. Here is some quick info from us shooting this last sunday at 1084 yards, 9500DA, 8 degree slope. Grendel with 130 JLK at 2600 (which is at max pressure with cfe 223) took 10.2 mils elevation and 1.7 mils for windage. The 108 at 2780 took 10.2 mils elevation and 1.8 mils of windage. The windage is for a 10 mph from the 3 o clock position. Huge differences? The .1 mils difference at 1084 in wind is 4"m yep 4 inches. Now lets look at 600 yards with the 130 it takes 3.9 mils for elevation and .7 mils for wind. The 108 takes 3.8 mils for elevation and .7 mils for wind. Now lets hit 300 with the 130, 1.2 mils and .3 for wind. The 108 is 1.0 mils for elevation and .3 for the wind. Now the 130 data is for 2600 fps which is not achievable in the summer (in my opinion) versus 8208 which is quite a bit more temperature stabile and you can have one load for all year. My load is not at max pressure but you can not fit anymore powder in the case, I believe the guys with 24" barrels will get another 25 fps over my 20" plus can. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

But with the can we get free bore boost, so that is why I said probably 25fps more than my 20" plus can. 2800 should be pretty easy for 24" with no can.
