AR Trigger? - Whelenon - 04-11-2011

This is my first AR Build. Using a YHM lower and a Timney Trigger(waiting for a 65G barrel) borrowed a 223 upper and went out shooting. I was expecting better from the $200 trigger. It let off at 3lb 2oz fine but tons of creep. Is this characteristic of all AR triggers or should I be looking for a different trigger group?

AR Trigger? - bwaites - 04-11-2011

I haven't been impressed by Timney's thought they certainly have their advocates.

I generally prefer single stage triggers, and really like the AA Tactical triggers for regular rifles. If I was considering a 2 stage, Geiselle is the only one I would consider. They have incredible feel.

The new AR Gold trigger is interesting, and I really would like to play with one and see if the reviews are consistent with the truth, but I haven't bought one yet.

I have 2 JP triggers. One in an AR15 type rifle. That trigger has about 10,000 rounds through it with zero malfunctions. The other one is in an AR10 style 308 (DPMS LR308). The 308 trigger has about 500-800 rounds through it.

Both triggers work perfectly. However, the DPMS trigger wasn't nearly as good as the one in the AR15 type rifle. So I called JP to ask about it. As it turns out, when DPMS installed the JP trigger, they put mine in without the JP spring kit, so it was only a partial trigger job. I felt like DPMS got really cheap as I could have purchased the entire trigger WITH JP SPRINGS for what DPMS charged me for just the trigger and hammer.

In any case, after I paid JP for the spring kit (hammer spring, and trigger spring) the trigger works beautifully.

I would suggest checking on all the parts, and call the trigger's manufacturer (that is what I did) and ask them for suggestions. Most trigger manufacturers work really hard to put out a good product, and they realize their reputation will be damaged if they don't fix the occasional bad trigger.

With mass produced items, I understand, and accept that occasionally there might be problems. As long as the manufacturer takes care of it, I can live with it.

Rifle Basix sent me a new trigger just because I was having trouble adjusting one that I bought from them. They sent me the new trigger BEFORE I returned the one that I was having trouble with. All they wanted was for me to be satisfied with their product. So, the new trigger went in, and I sent them the old trigger in the pre-paid package they sent me with the new trigger. That was great service, and I wouldn't hesitate to use their products again.

So, you agree, the trigger shouldn't have excess over travel before let off?

AR Trigger? - BlueOvalBruin - 04-11-2011

The AR Gold trigger is a fantastic trigger. Mine came from the factory at about 3lbs and have not bothered to adjust it at all. It was designed for the practical shooters though, so it feels like a good 1911 trigger (light 1st stage, heavier 2nd stage, crisp break, no creep, short reset). I have had a couple issues with misfires using the newer copper colored wolf small rifle primers, but no issues with other primer brands.

An expensive trigger with lots of creep would drive me nuts, but some folks like the rolling break I suppose.

Are those primers used in the wolf 6.5 factory loaded ammo?

Wolf factory Grendel ammo uses large primers.

BlueOval, are those the magnum small rifle or the regular small rifle?

AR Trigger? - StoneTower - 04-12-2011

I see that the AR Gold trigger comes in both a AR15 version and an AR308 (AR10) version. Timney's AR10 version has a bigger hammer and costs more than the smaller hammer version. Is there any disadvantage in running the AR Gold 308 version? I have Timney AR10 triggers in all my ARs (small and large frame). The bigger hammer in the Timney is made for the large military primers.

Those are my personal reloads. I haven't tried them with the wolf grendel factory ammo since I ran out of it. I was planning on getting some 120gr MPT though so I'll let you know how it goes.

Those were the regular small rifle primers. I bought the primers a year or 2 ago when the wolfs were the only ones easily available. I hand seated the primers so I know it's either overly-hard primers or weak hammer spring. It wouldn't surprise me if the AR Gold hammer spring is a little lighter than normal, but a lot of folks on the brian enos forum have been complaining about those particular primers.

Hmm, that's a good question. You might want to give them a call to get a definitive answer. I wonder if there would be an issue with using .22LR uppers with that trigger group.

AR Trigger? - bwaites - 04-12-2011

Understood. I've not heard of that issue, supposedly the Magnum and .223 Wolf primers have thicker cups, so if the regular ones won't fire with the AR Gold I really wonder about those.

Is it possible your firing pin might be a little worn and short and that might contribute to the issue?

Bill

I Agree! I have the SSA.

I'll have to check it for length, what's the spec? Shouldn't be worn though, I only have about 1000 rounds through that upper (18" rifle length JP15 .223 wylde). In that span I've had 2 misfires and 1 FTF from an untuned 44rd mag. Half of the 1000 has been factory though, no misfires from factory ammo so far.

AR Trigger? - bwaites - 04-12-2011

There is no specific length that I am aware of, only a protrusion spec. If I remember correctly, it is .026" on the bottom and .034" max.

You can buy gauges to check, but I have never had an issue, so I've not done it.

AR Trigger? - ARMANIAC - 04-12-2011

No, the trigger should not have excessive over travel if it is adjusted correctly. I'm not that familiar with the Timney or it's adjustability. I've used JP, Jard, Rock River, Giessel and Wilson. By far, in a single stage, the JP rules.

ARMANIAC Wrote:By far, in a single stage, the JP rules.

The JP single stage is a very decent trigger. They dropped the price on them recently, too.

AR Trigger? - bwaites - 04-13-2011

Hmmmm....if the single stage JP is nicer than the AA I may have to try it. The AA has no takeup, it just glass rod "breaks", though I wish there were a 1-2 pound version!

AR Trigger? - BlueOvalBruin - 04-13-2011

If you’re interested in the JP trigger I would highly recommend sending your lower to JP and have them install it versus putting one in yourself. JP installs are always better and worth the additional expense.

That's what I figured. I'm going to pull it out and see if it's adjustable and also contact Timney.
