New AA Overwatch upper wont go bang - Dave Bell - 06-20-2012

I resized new winchester 7.62x39 brass with no problems. Loaded up some test rounds. I took one outside to fire it to see how much case capacity changed after fireforming and click, no bang. The ejected round had no dent in the primer. Tried different cartridges, lowers (both Rock River). Took out the bolt and bolt carrier and the bolt seems very tight in the carrier, gas rings seem to not be smoothly sliding in there. Tried a different firing pin from 5.56 AR, no change.

Got a call in to AA, but curious about who can guess what's wrong first. Appreciate any advice on what to try, lube, polish, etc.

Have you tried factory ammo to determine if it's a weapon issue or a reloading issue?

Welcome, Dave. Is the weapon going into full battery? Also, there is a thread on here about some out of spec bolts that were too long.the bolts were too long, keeping the firing pin from makingcontact with primer IIRC.

More than likely you have the shoulder set back to far which if is the case you don't want it to go bang because you would have an excessive headspace condition and would be in danger of a head separation. The other possibility is that the bolt isn't going fully into battery but that should be easy to detect by comparing the position of the carrier with and without a round in the chamber. As said above try a factory round before you spend too much time on it.

Bob:

More likely the bolt isn't going fully into battery. I have sized down and fireformed many hundreds of 7.62 X 39 brass and if anything, it was hard to bump the shoulder enough.

He needs to put a sized but otherwise empty piece of brass into the chamber, ride the bolt forward an inch or so and let it fall. If it seats the brass -- OK. Next, see how easy it is to extract it. If it needs a cleaning rod to push it out, he needs to bump the shoulder more.

Bump the shoulder? How do I change shoulder separation?

OK, I went out to the shop and got a resized brass with primer and dropped it into the chamber, let the bolt fly and it's not going into battery. So, most likely my resized brass is all wrong. I ran 7.62 through the grendel dye and thought that was all I was supposed to do. I ran it through in the same manner that I would in reloading. Is that not correct?

Dave:

Screw the sizing die down hard on the shell holder and try a piece of the 7.62 X 39 brass.

Odd how things work out. I went back out to try the suggestion, and there on my shop porch was a package of 6.5 grendel brass from Nachez shooters supply. I put a primer in one and it popped right off. I then took one of the ones I was messing with the other day and bumped the shoulder down some more, and it went pop too. Problem solved. I was just about to package the upper up and return it for another one which also would not work, resulting in a loss of a weeks time, postage, and aggravation of trying to arrange UPS pickup. So, you guys saved me a total of $177.16 in gas, postage, time lost, and aggravation. Where do you want me to send the Money?

Are your dies and shell holder made by the same manufacturer? Don't miss match. There are differences between manufacturers.

Glad you got it working! Send it to LR1955, I think he hit the nail on the head! Lots of great knowledge around here.

I went through the same problems a few years ago when I started with the Grendel. I was resizing IMI brass, with Redding dies and shellholder, and having problems. Eventually I took some w/d sandpaper of varying grits and lapped a little off the top surface of my shell holder so I could bump the shoulder back a bit more and it solved the problem. I did not do any measurements before and after but just did trial and error until I could get the bolt to reliably go into battery with sized cases.
